Marsh<\/strong>, assistant professor of special education, co-authored \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s10864-021-09463-0\" rel=\"noopener\">Updated meta-analysis on the research on response cards\u201d<\/a> in <em>the Journal of Behavioral Education<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Katherine Perrotta<\/strong>, assistant professor of middle grades and secondary education, was interviewed about her research on promoting historical empathy in social studies on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/letsk12better.buzzsprout.com\/1036873\/9688670-historical-empathy-making-it-real-for-kids-with-dr-katie-perrotta\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLet \u2018s K-12 Better\u201d<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chp\">College of Health Professions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Jeannette Anderson<\/strong>, clinical associate professor of physical therapy, was appointed federal affairs liaison by the Georgia chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Ann Lucado<\/strong>, associate professor of physical therapy, co-authored the chapter \u201cTendinopathies of the upper extremity and biceps\/triceps injuries\u201d in the fourth edition of <em>Test Prep for the CHT Exam<\/em>, published by the American Society of Hand Therapists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Ellen Perlow<\/strong>, clinical associate professor of physical therapy, co-authored the manuscript \u201cA strategic physical therapy approach to restore function and maintain quality of life for a patient with multiple myeloma and vertebral fracture: A case report,\u201d published in <em>Physiotherapy Theory and Practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"clas\">College of Liberal Arts and Sciences<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. David A. Davis<\/strong>, professor of English, published the essay \u201cSince Time: S-Town and the Problem of Southern Temporality\u201d in the collection <em>Remediating Region: New Media and the U.S. South<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Riku Kawaguchi<\/strong>, assistant professor of sociology, presented a research paper, titled \u201cAssessing the Net and Joint Effect of Individual Activity Patterns and Neighborhood Characteristics on Racially-Motivated Hate Crime Victimization,\u201d in the session \u201cThe Causes and Consequences of Hate Crime\u201d at the annual meeting of American Society of Criminology held Nov. 18 in Chicago, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scot J. Mann<\/strong>, associate professor of communication and theatre, served as an official adjudicator for the Society of American Fight Directors\u2019 Performance Skills Test for the North Carolina School of the Arts, Florida State University, Florida Atlantic University, Roosevelt University and the Actor\u2019s Gym of Chicago. He also certified new instructors in his capacity as master firearms safety instructor for the national Theatrical Firearms Safety Course. At Mercer, Mann directed \u201cThe Commedia Pinocchio\u201d and served as producer and fight director for \u201cHamlet 2020: The Bard Meets the Black Experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Lydia Masanet<\/strong>, professor of Spanish, presented original work from her novel <em>Enhebradas<\/em> at the Conference XIV Encuentro Internacional de Escritoras EIDE in Caracas 2021, held virtually on Nov. 5. The conference celebrated major contributions of contemporary women writers throughout the Hispanic world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Erin McClenathan<\/strong>, assistant professor of art history, presented a paper, titled \u201cDyn\u2019s Photographic Vernacular,\u201d on Nov. 12 for the International Society for the Study of Surrealism\u2019s virtual conference Nuits blanches: Noches en Blanco: Around the Clock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennille Shuster<\/strong>, associate professor of graphic design, was selected by jury as artist-in-residence at Hypatia-in-the-Woods in Shelton, Washington, from Dec. 5-18. While in residence, Shuster presented a workshop, titled \u201cMasking and Overmarbling in the Suminigashi Method,\u201d on Dec. 11 in cooperation with the Timberland Shelton Library. Additionally, her artist book <em>Bound Together<\/em> was selected by jury for exhibition in \u201cNature Works Artist Book Exhibition\u201d from Dec. 3-24 at Upright Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Barry Stephenson<\/strong>, associate professor of biology, co-authored <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.zool.2021.125987\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe effect of albinism on avian predator attack rates in eastern garter snakes,\u201d<\/a> published in <em>Zoology<\/em>. The study was conducted with Zeshan Velani, an undergraduate research student in his lab, whose University Honors project was based on elements of this work, and <strong>Nikolett Ih\u00e1sz<\/strong>, coordinator of lab services in the Department of Psychology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Bryan J. Whitfield<\/strong>, professor and chair of religion, was awarded the Kilian McDonnell Fellowship in Faith and Culture at the Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he will be a resident scholar in spring 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"nurs\">College of Nursing<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Tammy D. Barb\u00e9,<\/strong> associate professor and associate dean for graduate programs, presented \u201cOptimizing Student Learning Using Cognitive Load Principles\u201d at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Transform 2021 Conference on Dec. 3 in Dallas, Texas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Justus Randolph<\/strong>, professor, co-authored \u201cTransatlantic collaboration of citizen astronomers in follow-up exoplanet detection: A joint observation of TOI 2031.01,\u201d a poster presented at the annual meeting of American Association of Variable Star Observers in Somerville, Massachusetts. Dr. Randolph also co-authored <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s10864-021-09463-0\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cUpdated meta-analysis of the research on response cards\u201d<\/a> in <em>the Journal of Behavioral Education<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Maura Schlairet<\/strong>, professor, <strong>Dr. Patricia Troyan<\/strong>, associate professor, and <strong>Dr. Jennifer Bartlett<\/strong>, associate professor, presented \u201cIt\u2019s Your Choice: Exploring Students Educational Motivation and Behaviors During a Pandemic\u201d at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Transform 2021 Conference on Dec. 3 in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Bartlett served as primary presenter.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pharm\">College of Pharmacy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Mahavir Bhupal Chougule<\/strong>, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, co-authored \u201cNanomedicine based approaches for combating viral infections\u201d in <em>the Journal of Controlled Release<\/em>, 338: 80-104.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"copa\">College of Professional Advancement<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Arla G. Bernstein<\/strong>, assistant professor and program coordinator of communication, completed the two-month program for Campus Compact\u2019s Community of Practice for Engaged Research and will present her findings to the College of Professional Advancement on Feb. 18.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"merc\">Mercer Engineering Research Center<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Thomas Brussat<\/strong>, technical advisor in the rotary wing product area, gave a presentation on \u201cStructural Risk Analysis of Helicopter Dynamic Components\u201d at the 2021 Aircraft Structural Integrity Program conference in Austin, Texas. Based on this work, MERC is developing a tool that will allow the United States Air Force to estimate the replacement lives of safety critical components on its helicopter fleets.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bus\">School of Business<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Laura Boman<\/strong>, assistant professor, co-authored \u201cLess light, better bite: How ambient lighting influences taste perceptions\u201d in <em>the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services<\/em>. The work was featured in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-10331969\/Dimming-lights-make-Christmas-dinner-taste-better-study-says.html?ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490&amp;ito=1490\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>. Dr. Boman and undergraduate student Dolph (Ivy) Nelson IV co-authored \u201cThe Effect of Diversity Initiatives by Brands on Consumer Perceptions,\u201d accepted to the Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Conference in March. Dr. Bowman and undergraduates Marissa Orlowski and Sarah Lefebvre co-authored \u201cThe Unintended Effects of Tamper-Evident Packaging,\u201d accepted to the same conference.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"med\">School of Medicine<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. James Drummond<\/strong>, assistant professor of microbiology, was appointed director of the Master of Science in Preclinical Sciences Program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Krista Mincey<\/strong>, associate professor of community medicine, published \u201cTeaching Bias to Undergraduate Students in an Introduction to Public Health Course\u201d for a special issue on \u201cThe Pedagogy of Antiracism\u201d in <em>Pedagogy in Health Promotion: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Bonzo Reddick<\/strong>, professor and chair of community medicine, was selected as Citizen of the Year for Savannah for 2021 by the Mu Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The award is given to non-fraternity members in the city who have made significant contributions to the community.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"theo\">School of Theology<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Angela Parker<\/strong>, assistant professor of New Testament and Greek, had her book, titled <em>If God Still Breathes, Why Can\u2019t I? Black Lives Matter and Biblical Authority<\/em>, named by <em>Word&amp;Way<\/em> as one of its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wordandway.org\/2021\/12\/07\/our-2021-books-of-the-year\/\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Books of the Year<\/a>. <em>Word&amp;Way<\/em> is an award-winning monthly magazine that launched in 1896 covering Baptist news across denominational lines.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"staff\">Staff and Administration<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. Deborah A. Johnson-Blake<\/strong>, substitute coordinator of the Douglas County Regional Academic Center, was appointed as a board member for the Hospital Authority of Douglas County. Members of the board serve as ambassadors and advisers for community health care initiatives and assist in raising funds for health care programs and services. This is a four-year term for appointed Douglas County residents, and the appointment alternates between the Board of Commissioners and the Hospital Authority.
