Martin Luther King Jr. bequeathed to the nation a message of peace, racial justice and non-violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SJ3AYRRESBEARCNKDHQDNXTI54\">Across the decades, since King\u2019s work and words were immortalized, those ideals have arguably been elusive for Black Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VESKYIMQCNFW5A5JYYOSHP3WIU\">Seldom though, some say, has the assault on racial justice been as concerted as in recent times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HTKBCS3QIJF4FPHEVIANATHSQA\">As the country commemorates King\u2019s life and legacy, many Black Americans say they are disheartened by what they see as a systemic assault on racial justice and civil rights, one that puts King\u2019s message to the test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XV4VCJ254JCLZHNHFGF4JCNJC4\">\u201cI think his legacy is still here. I think there are warriors who are willing to work on behalf of the people,\u201d said Kadida Kenner, founding executive director of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newpaproject.org\/contact-us\/\" rel=\"noopener\">New Pennsylvania Project,<\/a> a voting rights organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OBPGSB6QUNB27GYC3ME366ULCU\">\u201cHis legacy will never be destroyed. It seems to me that any time we make progress on racial issues, even on economic equality, we regress for a moment, but we find our center again and we get back to what is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZA6MQJR3JZCVLNENNMCTVMI4I4\">Black scholars and social activists say the events of recent years &#8211; the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, among many others, and the sustained racial disparities affecting health and economic welfare and the reemergence of white supremacy \u2014 serve as reminders that racial justice continues to be an illusory ideal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HO7MB5HTDJESBKEBWGGP4456FM\">Nowhere is the assault on King\u2019s legacy as stark, Black Americans say, than in the mounting assault on voting rights across the country.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image\">\n<div class=\"article__image-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/resizer\/zauCA_Ek7_iXu1g8FHy1pC3bNm4=\/500x0\/smart\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/advancelocal\/PXFCYUOQXVC63EAGF7TBFVGEDE.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/resizer\/f0ogPeAu_qZQgyghbGxMwPdhcv8=\/800x0\/smart\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/advancelocal\/PXFCYUOQXVC63EAGF7TBFVGEDE.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/resizer\/SXUW9hoJToNJxjzuIUjMrAbCqJU=\/1280x0\/smart\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/advancelocal\/PXFCYUOQXVC63EAGF7TBFVGEDE.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, 50vw\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/resizer\/SXUW9hoJToNJxjzuIUjMrAbCqJU=\/1280x0\/smart\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/advancelocal\/PXFCYUOQXVC63EAGF7TBFVGEDE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"MLK Day\" class=\"article__image-content\" height=\"600\" width=\"300\"\/><figcaption class=\"article__image-caption\">\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">Black Americans overwhelmingly say that the racial justice ideals preached by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. have been largely elusive for them &#8211; and in recent chaotic times, even less so. <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KSYJSNHFBZAIXHRH76VHAR4QZ4\">\u201cWe talk about the fact that Republicans and Democrats aren\u2019t working together,\u201d said Kenner, whose voting rights organization is modeled after the successful New Georgia Project founded by Stacey Abrams in 2014. \u201cWhat concerns me is that even at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, when people were getting bloody and killed, there were still Republicans willing to work across the aisle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U463E2VKJ5CXRA5CYFOROE2Y54\">As President Joe Biden noted this week, voting rights reauthorization legislation has historically received overwhelming bipartisan support. That\u2019s no longer the case, Kenner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EXUD5PL7MJELHIYC4QL22AHVF4\">\u201cIn this moment we don\u2019t have a single Republican willing to reauthorize voting rights,\u201d Kenner said. \u201cThat\u2019s concerning. I think in this moment we are so politicized, so concerned with remaining in power, that we are willing to do things we didn\u2019t do in the height of the 1960s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NCHZIYEBCJBIDHZ5HNZ5JSKAPU\">As Congress faces the unlikely passage of laws protecting voter rights, social activists say efforts to disenfranchise minority voters are a setback for racial justice \u2014 and as such, a deliberate erosion of King\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OYRVBXRBYFBFBFSJQYG5SVGIDM\">\u201cThere were a lot of people throughout the Civil Rights struggle who made the ultimate sacrifice and now that sacrifice is being cheapened every time someone tries to introduce voting rights restrictions,\u201d said Joseph Robinson, head of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Development Institute in Harrisburg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IEAQ4GA3NBHKNMWJGCLXGVLDLU\">\u201cIt is disheartening. Their sacrifice, their contribution to this country is being marginalized and devalued every time efforts are made to introduce changes that would prohibit or limit people\u2019s access to voting. It\u2019s a disservice to all those willing to pay the ultimate price, including Dr. King.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HVDVOSEERJDGDHSCUBZSTMYQ4Q\">Since the November 2020 presidential election, nearly 400 bills have been introduced in 48 states to restrict voting rights; approximately 34 of those bills have been ratified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EBJNFWGKRJEHNOIE3DY6TS5PIU\">Amid a deeply divided Senate, Democrats are making a renewed push to get federal voting legislation \u2014 the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act \u2014 through the high chamber. The bills are widely seen as imperative for the protection of voting rights, particularly those of minorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BY74I4IQZBEOPBJHEEADWXMTNM\">\u201cI don\u2019t think Dr. King would be surprised at what is happening,\u201d Kenner said. \u201cHe knew our democracy was fragile and we had to continue to fight. We took our guard down. We got complacent and comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AK4IG7LJ7JCBZGAGIU3PI6P3KQ\">Black scholars note that the racial justice movement in this country has been plotted on a trajectory of evolving challenges from Jim Crow and the fight for equality in education, to employment and the voting booth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UXMH5SR7RBGPTJTWBP4F7A4DCI\">The current struggles are merely the latest chapter in the narrative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BLZB4HEMZNDOBBEFVVLCS2WDIM\">\u201cDr. King, I think, got us started,\u201d said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/afam.la.psu.edu\/people\/ntd10\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Niki vonLockette<\/a>, associate professor of Public Policy and African American Studies at Penn State. \u201cI feel you can literally say he got us started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DAJOGSZL3ZG3TL6FNKAXGJP6GE\">VonLockette, who is writing a book on systemic discrimination, said she is at times humbled by the perennial struggles over the same battles, including those for voting rights and economic justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YJDWQ73IP5AJZHA33RDPSPKWLU\">\u201cI thought we took care of all this? Didn\u2019t we fix this already?\u201d she said she often asks herself. \u201cThat\u2019s our assumption. We thought we solved this problem. But we are just getting started. That\u2019s bad news. It feels depressing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5AK5QHXL55ELZIKNIPYFSKTV34\">As someone who relies on quantitative evidence and not mere assertions, vonLockette said she has examined the forensics of modern day racism and draws no reassurance from it that King\u2019s legacy is honored by all Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LXUQBUEDSRFFTCLCGE7H2HFMC4\">\u201cThe evidence shows us that we have made \u2014 across sociological, economic and public policy \u2014 limited strides,\u201d she said. \u201cMany of those strides have been pushed back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z5D2MDAY55HCFHTFLHSZWYJXUI\">Of course, many stakeholders in the Black community note significant progress that has been made since King called upon the nation to examine its conscience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M5VUUXI5LFFXPF5R3U6CHE4ZLI\">Newly installed Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams said unity and singularity of purpose attests to that progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XWUAUKU7TZDYBKD2UX55EHEIXA\">\u201cAs for what has brought that about, I would have to say that sometimes in the darkest of hours, we bring about our own light,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XCJ6GGBS55D5TCHRMWVXBJTZAU\">The victories garnered by social justice leaders such as King, the late Congressman John Lewis, Justice Thurgood Marshall and The Rev. Jesse Jackson, may be under attack, Williams added, but the challenge is invigorating the forces that are pushing back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2SOSROXIY5BWVLIBMIDBUUBPWI\">\u201c(W)e have always believed that an attack on the freedoms of any American is viewed within our community as an attack on all Americans,\u201d Williams said. \u201cI see a unity, that coming together for the greater good, that I have not seen in many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7YUH67ZAGVAXPBPT66MYGFNQKQ\">Williams said one needs to look no further than the halls of Congress or city government to see King\u2019s legacy in a profound and obvious way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KQL6LOXXQ5EZDGCSBUO4RVERJA\">\u201cWe are electing a more diverse group of people to office than ever before,\u201d she said. \u201cSo just as there are causes for concern with issues like the erosion of the protections of the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act, there is so much promise in seeing people from all walks of life, especially traditionally underrepresented minorities, standing up, because they see the problems plaguing their community and they want to remedy them. Above all else, Dr. King was a beacon of light in a sea of darkness to so many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2YCS42TRZ5CNJHLC3NOXZEKDBE\">Madeline Williams, a spokeswoman for Capital Rebirth, a racial justice advocacy group, said King\u2019s message and legacy can be seen in the robust and growing advocacy for racial equality and last year\u2019s commemoration of Juneteenth into a federal holiday. The holiday commemorates the end of slavery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BQXXT6I7HBEPBAXMNOKF6X47XA\">\u201cI think that the amount of allies that have become a part of the movement that celebrates black lives is really what Dr. Martin Luther King was advocating for,\u201d Williams said. \u201cHe very frankly said \u2018I\u2019m looking forward to a day where Black people and white people can get along where we can live harmoniously and celebrate our shared humanity.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ETSPXH333JEK5EQIAHE7YZBLUM\">Williams, whose organization a few years ago organized Black Lives Matter rallies in Harrisburg, noted that King\u2019s legacy imbued many of those events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I4UDO5K2DVBMBDA6P54ZDGBJIQ\">\u201cJuneteenth is an example of the protest last year with George Floyd. Just here in Harrisburg down at the capital,\u201d Williams said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t uncommon to see Asian people, Latino people, or to see white people there saying black lives matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SV4HUK5G7VHE5E764GCE56YAYI\">For vonLockette, whose great-great grandfather \u2014 one of the few Black financiers in this country at the time \u2014 was at the forefront of the civil rights movement, the setbacks are mere stepping stones in the path forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XGLAU5BKIVDQ5CJ6RORCSDKAAY\">\u201cThat\u2019s the positive side,\u201d she said. \u201cThey got the ball rolling. We still have so much work to do. There\u2019s a lot to show but we got pushed back. But this new generation is pushing forward and being heard in powerful sectors.
