{"id":27990,"date":"2022-01-22T05:34:32","date_gmt":"2022-01-22T05:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=27990"},"modified":"2022-01-22T05:34:32","modified_gmt":"2022-01-22T05:34:32","slug":"legal-advocacy-groups-dissatisfied-with-bidens-progress-on-criminal-justice-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/22\/legal-advocacy-groups-dissatisfied-with-bidens-progress-on-criminal-justice-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"Legal advocacy groups &#8216;dissatisfied&#8217; with Biden&#8217;s progress on criminal justice: Poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Legal advocacy groups are dissatisfied with President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a>\u2018s progress on criminal justice, which they argue has fallen short of the more than 100 changes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">he<\/a> promised on the campaign trail, according to a new survey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the survey published this month by legal news service Law360, seven of the 13 advocacy organizations polled gave Mr. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a> a grade of \u201cD\u201d or \u201cF\u201d for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">his<\/a> criminal justice policy and legislative efforts during <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">his<\/a> first year in office.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the groups also said they were \u201cdissatisfied\u201d or \u201cvery dissatisfied\u201d with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">his<\/a> progress. Three groups ranked it \u201cabove average\u201d or \u201cvery good,\u201d while two groups said it was \u201caverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside>\n                         <\/aside>\n<p>Maritza Perez, director of the Drug Policy Alliance\u2018s Office of National Affairs, told the news service that Mr. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a>\u2018s poor criminal justice policy decisions have contradicted <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">his<\/a> campaign rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a president who has said that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">he<\/a> thinks that drug use is a public health issue and it should not be addressed through the criminal legal system, yet one of the first things that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">he<\/a> puts out on criminal justice is legislative text that would essentially put more people under the legal system and in jail and in prison,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">she<\/a> said in reference to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">his<\/a> proposal to Congress to regulate fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid that is 100 times stronger than morphine.<\/p>\n<p>Insha Rahman, vice president of advocacy and partnerships for the Vera Institute of Justice, told the news service that Mr. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a> missed various opportunities to make significant changes, including dispelling the narrative that making changes to the criminal justice system would cause more crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the rise of shootings and homicides over the past two years, criminal justice reform is facing strong headwinds and opposition from law enforcement, prosecutors and \u2018law and order\u2019 elected officials,\u201d Mr. Rahman said. \u201cThey have seized the narrative to make it seem that arrests, prosecution, courts and incarceration are the only ways to produce public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Mr. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a>\u2018s campaign vow to reduce the federal prison population, it has increased by roughly 5,000 people since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">he<\/a> took office a year ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aamra Ahmad, senior policy counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, told the\u00a0news outlet that she has lost hope in the president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <a target=\"_blank\" name=\"pagebreak\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe easiest issue for him to have tackled coming into office was granting clemency to people who are on home confinement under the CARES Act,\u201d she said. \u201cThese were people who were released under Trump administration policies and have a proven track record now that they\u2019ve been released of abiding by the law and the rules of home confinement.
