The message was clear: Baca was not worthy of a museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Fifty years later, Baca\u2019s an internationally celebrated artist, whose large-scale works of public art have left an unmatched imprint on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2021-12-02\/artist-judy-baca-beyond-murals-molaa-retrospective\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">the artistic landscape of LA<\/a>. And the Chicana muralist, scholar and activist is now receiving long overdue mainstream <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/how-judy-bacas-murals-help-recover-history-through-public-memory\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">recognition<\/a>. The Museum of Latin American Art (Molaa) in Long Beach, California, is running the first major <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/molaa.org\/2021-judy-baca\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">retrospective<\/a> on her work, and a major <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moca.org\/exhibition\/judith-f-baca-the-world-wall\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">show<\/a> at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca) in Los Angeles is planned for September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cI never expected to be part of the 1% that would live on my art,\u201d Baca, 75, said in a recent interview. \u201cThis is the first time in my career in which people are seeking to buy my work, to own pieces of the Judy Baca MOLAA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">For years, Baca said, the white, male-dominated art industry was uninterested in her. \u201cMy work has been ignored a lot in LA \u2026 and the men here have been pretty profoundly unable to see women as their peers. That\u2019s been the struggle of my whole life as a Chicana and activist and feminist. It\u2019s created a devil-may-care attitude for me. I had to just perceive what I was doing as significant for myself and my community and move ahead with willfulness and belief, buoyed by the community people I worked with \u2013 not by the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Baca was born in Watts, an LA neighborhood known for the 1965 uprisings, and grew up in Pacoima, near the LA river. Her grandparents came from Mexico to La Junta, Colorado during the Mexican Revolution, a story told in her Denver airport mural, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/portfolio\/memoria-de-nuestra-tierra\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">La Memoria de Nuestra Tierra<\/a>, and at the entrance of her Molaa retrospective<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cThis was the first massive migration of Mexican people into the United States \u2026 although in some ways, we didn\u2019t cross the border, the border crossed us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"dcr-wirt34\"><span class=\"dcr-14gqw6s\"><svg width=\"70\" height=\"49\" viewbox=\"0 0 35 25\" data-testid=\"quote-icon\" class=\"dcr-30ovmo\"><path d=\"M69.587.9c-1.842 15.556-3.89 31.316-4.708 48.1H37.043c3.07-16.784 8.391-32.544 17.602-48.1h14.942zM32.949.9c-2.047 15.556-4.094 31.316-4.912 48.1H.2C3.066 32.216 8.592 16.456 17.598.9h15.35z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-1u4hpl4\"><p>I hope the show reminds people that we\u2019re dealing with the same thing over and over again, and if we don\u2019t fix it, we have to keep reliving it<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<footer><cite class=\"dcr-1dq6qie\">Judy Baca<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">While her mother worked at a factory in her early childhood, her grandmother raised her and had a huge <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/grandmother-audio\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">influence<\/a> on her creativity: \u201cMy grandmother had a special relationship with the spirit world. She would begin my day by saying, \u2018What did you dream?\u2019 \u2026 I realized there was more to living than simply what was visible, tangibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Her grandma\u2019s indigenous identity also shaped her: \u201cPeople were not able to own their indigeneity, because it was not considered attractive or good. But my grandmother was indigenous and she looked Apache.\u201d Baca\u2019s grandmother practiced a kind of \u201ccuranderismo\u201d, meaning people came to her for counsel and healing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Baca\u2019s mother worried she would not earn a living as an artist and encouraged her to get a degree in education \u2013 a path that led her to muralism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Baca created her first mural while working at a Catholic high school, as a way to channel the students\u2019 interest in graffiti. SPARC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">In 1974, she launched the city of LA\u2019s first mural program, which produced over 400 murals and soon after, co-founded the Social and Public Art Resource Center (Sparc), a public art <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sparcinla.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">community organization<\/a>, housed in an old jailhouse. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Baca began building the Great Wall of Los Angeles, in 1976 along the Tujunga wash in the San Fernando Valley, with the idea of painting a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/judy-baca-news\/the-woman-behind-the-worlds-longest-mural\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">tattoo on the scar where the river once ran<\/a>\u201d. Originally <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sparcinla.org\/the-great-wall-part-2\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">named<\/a> The History of California, the mural is one of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/judy-baca-news\/the-woman-behind-the-worlds-longest-mural\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">longest<\/a> in the world and depicts forgotten histories of people of color in California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Over five years, she worked with hundreds of youth \u2013 some of whom were diverted from the criminal justice system \u2013 to paint a visual history of stories that disappeared along with the river, from prehistoric times to the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">The narratives within the 2,754-ft <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sparcinla.org\/the-great-wall-part-2\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">mural<\/a> include a little-known <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lapl.org\/collections-resources\/blogs\/lapl\/chinese-massacre-1871\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">massacre<\/a> of Chinese people in LA in 1871; the mass <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sparcinla.org\/the-great-wall-part-2\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">deportations<\/a> of Mexican Americans in the 1930s; and a portrait of Luisa Moreno, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/great-wall-of-los-angeles.htm\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">farm-workers<\/a> labor organizer in the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cWhat I learned from the young people who participated is that it changed forever the way that they saw each other,\u201d Baca said. \u201cWe were in segregated communities \u2026 but they were all sort of \u2018rejects\u2019, thought to be young people who will never succeed. But that mixing with each other, which has continued for a lifetime, was a remarkable change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">In 1980, Baca became a professor in studio art at the University of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a>, the only Chicana to have a tenured position in visual arts and one of a handful of senior Chicana professors across the public university system.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"dcr-wirt34\"><span class=\"dcr-14gqw6s\"><svg width=\"70\" height=\"49\" viewbox=\"0 0 35 25\" data-testid=\"quote-icon\" class=\"dcr-30ovmo\"><path d=\"M69.587.9c-1.842 15.556-3.89 31.316-4.708 48.1H37.043c3.07-16.784 8.391-32.544 17.602-48.1h14.942zM32.949.9c-2.047 15.556-4.094 31.316-4.912 48.1H.2C3.066 32.216 8.592 16.456 17.598.9h15.35z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-1u4hpl4\"><p>Judy rethinks a collective memory and identity as a fundamental link in the construction of women\u2019s power \u2013 Chicana, Latina, women of color.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<footer><cite class=\"dcr-1dq6qie\">Gabriela Urtiaga<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">The Molaa exhibit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.einnews.com\/pr_news\/546375045\/molaa-presents-the-first-comprehensive-retrospective-of-internationally-renowned-artist-and-activist-judy-baca\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">includes<\/a> more than 110 of Baca\u2019s works, spotlighting the history of the Great Wall, and featuring paintings, sculptures and early drawings. There are portraits of her dressed as a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2021-12-02\/artist-judy-baca-beyond-murals-molaa-retrospective\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">pachuca<\/a>\u201d in the 1970s for LA\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2021-12-02\/artist-judy-baca-beyond-murals-molaa-retrospective\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">first all-Chicana show<\/a>; her striking Josefina: Ofrenda to the Domestic Worker <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/675296\/how-judy-baca-redefined-the-intersection-of-art-and-activism\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">print<\/a>; a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/art\/raspadosmojados\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">vendor cart<\/a> painted with histories of the criminalization of undocumented people; and study drawings of the World Wall, her <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/portfolio\/theworldwall\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">mural<\/a> that has traveled around the globe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Gabriela Urtiaga, Molaa\u2019s chief curator, said in an email that Baca \u201chas always [been] and continues to be a pivotal figure looking for new alternatives to speak about silenced voices, and the figure of women as an essential part of her creative work\u201d, adding, \u201cJudy rethinks a collective memory and identity as a fundamental link in the construction of women\u2019s power \u2013 Chicana, Latina, women of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Some of the most fascinating displays capture obstacles she overcame. On a draft drawing of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/staging\/product\/la-memoria-de-nuestra-tierra-usc\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">mural<\/a> commissioned for the University of Southern California in the 1990s, she wrote down critiques from administrators who tried to censor the painting, which depicted conflicts, violence and resistance movements involving Latinos in LA: \u201cJudy, we believe that this mural is not understandable to an Anglo audience and is too negative. The history you represent is depressing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cI do not make the history, I just paint about it,\u201d she responded on the mural draft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">The exhibit also chronicles the reaction to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.judybaca.com\/artist\/portfolio\/danzas-indigenious\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">Danzas Indigenas<\/a>, a monument she created in 1994 at an LA rail station, meant to honor indigenous history in the region. In 2005, an anti-immigrant group, Save Our State, protested the monument; the footage on display closely resembles the white supremacist rallies of recent years and the growing push to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2021\/jun\/30\/critical-race-theory-rightwing-social-media-viral-video\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">erase Archive<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cI hope the show reminds people that we\u2019re dealing with the same thing over and over again, and if we don\u2019t fix it, we have to keep reliving it,\u201d Baca said, adding that seeing decades of her work curated in a museum format has been validating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cI always thought I\u2019d make a work and it\u2019d go out into the ether, never to be seen again or spoken about,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I realized that when I was making it, that I was processing through my hands, and through my art. I was finding a way to live with truth that was hard and difficult. It was a way of keeping me sane, and keeping me in the process of healing, and healing those around me \u2026 and I\u2019ve learned that my instincts were good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Why does she believe she is finally getting proper recognition?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">\u201cMaybe they think I\u2019m gonna die,\u201d she said with a laugh, adding that the recent social justice uprisings have forced a reckoning in the arts. For so long, she said, \u201cIt was the gatekeepers, and the remarkable failure to deal with the Latino community in any real way. I think it\u2019s a lot about the referencing and metaphors that define a people as \u2018aliens\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"dcr-wirt34\"><span class=\"dcr-14gqw6s\"><svg width=\"70\" height=\"49\" viewbox=\"0 0 35 25\" data-testid=\"quote-icon\" class=\"dcr-30ovmo\"><path d=\"M69.587.9c-1.842 15.556-3.89 31.316-4.708 48.1H37.043c3.07-16.784 8.391-32.544 17.602-48.1h14.942zM32.949.9c-2.047 15.556-4.094 31.316-4.912 48.1H.2C3.066 32.216 8.592 16.456 17.598.9h15.35z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-1u4hpl4\"><p>My grandmother had a special relationship with the spirit world \u2026 I realized there was more to living than simply what was visible, tangibly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<footer><cite class=\"dcr-1dq6qie\">Judy Baca<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">Last year, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2021-03-31\/lucas-museum-narrative-art-judith-baca-great-wall-mural\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired the archives<\/a> related to the Great Wall, and the Andrew W Mellon Foundation awarded Sparc $5m to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.ucla.edu\/single\/great-wall-of-la-to-undergo-expansion-in-time-for-2028-summer-olympics\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">expand the wall<\/a> to include stories from the 1960s to 2020. The 1960s section will feature a \u201cgeneration on fire\u201d fighting Jim Crow and Alabama firemen hosing protesters. The 70s will start with the Alcatraz occupation, with a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2019\/11\/27\/let_s_give_thanks_for_indigenous\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"noopener\">quote<\/a> from Oglala Lakota leader Red Cloud: \u201cThey made us many promises \u2026 but they kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">While Baca is hopeful about her future projects, she is disheartened about the state of the art form: \u201cMuralism as a whole has been diminished in LA. It\u2019s totally commercial. The only things that can get made are those paid by corporations that want to decorate buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-eu20cu\">She lamented that the city lacked the kind of public program that she launched in the 70s, noting how murals can shape our understanding of history and \u201ccreate sites of public memory\u201d when done with communities: \u201cMurals can do some amazing work in the world, because they live in the places where people live and work, because they can be made in relationship to the people who see them, because the people themselves can have input, if it\u2019s done in a profound way.
