The cause of death was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n<p>Naor, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2003, served as head of Israel\u2019s top court from 2015 to 2017, when she retired.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, Naor was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/former-chief-justice-naor-to-head-meron-disaster-probe-with-sweeping-mandate\/\" rel=\"noopener\">serving as head<\/a> of the state commission of inquiry into last year\u2019s Meron disaster, during which 45 people were killed in a crush at a religious festival, in the worst civilian disaster in Israel\u2019s history. It was not immediately clear how the state commission will move forward; initial reports indicated that Supreme Court Chief Esther Hayut is expected to select a new chair for the committee in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>The Judicial Authority said in a statement that it was \u201cshocked with grief and pain\u201d at news of Naor\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Naor was born in Jerusalem in 1947, and received her law degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. (Yonatan Sindel\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEven today, as the decades have passed and I have served in all the courts, I am grateful that my path led me to being a judge,\u201d she said during her parting speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State of Israel can be proud of the independence of its judiciary, who fear nothing but the law,\u201d Naor said. \u201cJudicial independence, however, should not be taken for granted. We must protect it. If we do not protect democracy, democracy will not protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- \/3933714\/TOI_Desktop\/336x280_Middle_1 --><\/p>\n<p>An array of politicians and government officials expressed sorrow at Naor\u2019s sudden death.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called Naor a \u201crespected jurist\u201d who was always \u201ccareful to maintain the required balance between the variety of values \u200b\u200bin Israeli society, and to strengthen the national and Zionist character of the State of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbove all, she was a person of the people,\u201d said Bennett. \u201cShe treated every individual with respect and made sure to use her words calmly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Naor for her \u201cdeep commitment to the State of Israel and the world of law, to which she contributed so much throughout her life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Isaac Herzog said Naor \u201cwill be remembered in Israeli history as the queen of justice and as one of the titans of Israeli law \u2014 a wise, knowledgeable, sensitive, strong, and independent woman, who remained modest even as she sat on the highest courts in the land.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1716876\" class=\"wp-caption  aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1716876\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesofisrael.com\/www\/uploads\/2017\/10\/F170222YS76-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, right, with Supreme Court Chief Justice Miriam Naor at the Ministry of Justice in Jerusalem, February 22, 2017.
