{"id":28740,"date":"2022-02-13T20:29:07","date_gmt":"2022-02-13T20:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=28740"},"modified":"2022-02-13T20:29:07","modified_gmt":"2022-02-13T20:29:07","slug":"americans-think-bidens-presidency-is-a-failure-democrats-can-fix-that","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/02\/13\/americans-think-bidens-presidency-is-a-failure-democrats-can-fix-that\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans think Biden&#8217;s presidency is a failure \u2014 Democrats can fix that"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div property=\"content:encoded\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Democratic Party with Joe Biden at the helm has lost sight of how to connect with Americans, and as a result, is finding itself in an increasingly unelectable position.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.cnn.com\/cnn\/2022\/02\/10\/politics\/cnn-poll-biden-approval\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Americans also say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the first year of the Biden Administration has been more of a failure (57 percent), rather than a success (41 percent). Notably, Independents and Latinos \u2014 two key swing-voting groups \u2014 have turned against the administration, as majorities of both deem the first year of the Biden presidency a failure.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be sure, many of Americans\u2019 frustrations \u2014 including the pervasive pandemic and skyrocketing inflation \u2014 are not fully and completely within the president\u2019s control. Yet, voters blame him for these crises, as is the case with most presidents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, the president is in no way fully at the mercy of these external forces, and his declining ratings are due in large part to the fact that Americans simply don\u2019t feel that Biden\u2019s and Democrats\u2019 priorities align with their own.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/biden-inflation-first-year-opinion-poll\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two-thirds of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say that Biden and Democrats are focusing on issues that they either don\u2019t care about (39 percent) or only care a little about (28 percent). Just one-third say that Biden and Democrats are focusing on issues they care a lot about.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, with just nine months until the midterm elections, Democrats must dedicate their focus to advancing centrist legislation that improves Americans\u2019 quality of life and addresses their top concerns. In 1996, Clinton won re-election by a landslide; in 1998, Democrats defied expectations and kept control of Congress; and in 2000, Clinton left office under a budget surplus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, there are several issues that would give Democrats an opportunity to deliver in a bipartisan fashion \u2014 including transforming job training programs, passing fair and reasonable tax policies, improving immigration laws, and reforming criminal justice.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foremost, Biden needs to show voters that he can deliver on the economy and jobs, as <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.cnn.com\/cnn\/2022\/02\/10\/politics\/cnn-poll-biden-approval\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">62 percent of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disapprove of how he is handling the economy \u2014 including 69 percent of Independents and 57 percent of Latinos.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, Democrats need to make a sincere commitment to fiscal discipline and prudence that involves ruling out any tax increases or new spending initiatives that lack broad bipartisan support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means fundamentally altering the Democratic party\u2019s current theory on tax policy, which centers on a misguided notion that the redistribution of wealth by taxing the rich is politically valuable, and will not cause any electoral backlash. Indeed, my own experience along with past history suggests that this theory is problematic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, given the dramatic shifts in the workforce and labor market that occurred during the pandemic, it is both practical and politically wise for Democrats to prioritize improving federal job training programs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing on passing the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaine.senate.gov\/press-releases\/kaine-applauds-house-passage-of-america-competes-act-including-his-bipartisan-jobs-act\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JOBS Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a bipartisan bill currently being considered by the Senate that would expand federal Pell Grant eligibility to high-quality, short-term job training programs \u2014 is a good starting point. The JOBS Act would close the skills gap by helping more workers afford the job training and credentials that are in demand as industries have shifted during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the economic predicament, the Biden administration is also facing a multi-faceted immigration crisis, both in terms of the disaster at the Southern border, as well as the unsettled status of millions of undocumented immigrants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just one-third (33 percent) of voters overall \u2014 including only 26 percent of Independents and 37 percent of Hispanics \u2014 approve of Biden\u2019s handling of immigration, while a majority (56 percent) disapprove, per a\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.morningconsult.com\/wp-uploads\/2022\/02\/08222920\/2202029_crosstabs_POLITICO_RVs_v2_SH.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morning Consult survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republicans have worked somewhat successfully to tie the migrant crisis at the border to Biden\u2019s failed policies; and at the same time, immigration activists on the left are frustrated with the president for not following through on the promises he made during the campaign.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Democrats can make an effort to work with Republicans on an immigration package that codifies lasting protections for Dreamers, creates a pathway to citizenship, secures the border, and requires employers to use E-Verify to certify the legal status of new hires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criminal justice reform presents another opportunity for Democrats to pursue a grand bargain with Republicans as crime rates spike across the country. A reasonable compromise would involve making the criminal justice system and policing fairer for Black Americans, who are disproportionately mistreated, while also funding local law enforcement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to connect with voters in the middle who are concerned both about crime and curbing police misconduct, Biden can use New York City Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 approach as a template.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Absent action by Democrats, Republican attacks on Democrats as being soft-on-crime will undoubtedly resonate in the midterms \u2014 as 70 percent of voters believe crime in the country is out of control, while only 30 percent say crime is mostly under control, per the January\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/harvardharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/January-2022_HHP_Topline.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard CAPS\/Harris poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, by prioritizing immigration and crime, national Democrats can also protect vulnerable members of their caucus in the midterms from G.O.P. attacks linking Democratic policies to the border crisis and rising crime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And by advocating for more reasonable tax policies and pursuing policies that help America\u2019s workers Democrats can reclaim the mantle as the pro-American worker party, while also inoculating against G.O.P. attacks on Democrats\u2019 economic policies as being too liberal or wasteful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without this course correction, <span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"rollover-people-link\" data-nid=\"188332\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\" rel=\"noopener\">President Biden<\/a><span class=\"rollover-people-block\" id=\"rollover-people-188332\"><span class=\"rollover-block\"><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/thumb_100\/public\/blogs\/bidenjoe_081315getty_0.jpg?itok=zk8qw7g2\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" alt=\"\"\/><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"name\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"people-articles\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/cybersecurity\/594013-us-cyber-defense-agency-warns-of-possible-russian-cyberattacks-amid\" rel=\"noopener\">US cyber defense agency warns of possible Russian cyberattacks amid tensions<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"people-articles\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/594011-afghans-protest-us-order-to-free-up-35b-in-frozen-afghanistan-funds-to\" rel=\"noopener\">Afghans protest US order to free up .5B in frozen Afghanistan funds to compensate 9\/11 victims<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"people-articles\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/sunday-talk-shows\/594006-sunday-shows-preview-white-house-says-russia-could-invade-any-day\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday shows preview: White House says Russia could invade &#8216;any day&#8217;; RNC censure resolution receives backlash<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\" rel=\"noopener\">MORE<span\/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019s ratings will continue to drop, and Democrats are almost certain to be brought down by Republicans in 2022 and beyond.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Douglas E.
