(WSAV) \u2013- The prosecution and defense rested their cases Friday afternoon in the federal hate-crimes trial of the three men convicted of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsav.com\/tag\/ahmaud-arbery-case\/\">Ahmaud Arbery<\/a>\u2018s murder.<\/p>\n<p>The jury heard from a total of 20 witnesses over four days of testimony. <\/p>\n<p>Jurors are expected to return on Monday to hear closing arguments before they deliberate whether father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor, William \u201cRoddie\u201d Bryan, pursued Arbery because he was Black.<\/p>\n<p>A legal expert told WSAV that ample time for planning has helped the trial move faster than expected \u2014 but the jury has a difficult job ahead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsav.com\/news\/local-news\/racial-slurs-aired-at-hate-crime-trial-in-arbery-killing\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tOfficer testifies Arbery never burglarized home\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the research in hate crime trials, it\u2019s very difficult to come back with a guilty verdict,\u201d said Dr. Chad Posick, a criminal justice professor at Georgia Southern University. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain, you really have to get into the minds of the individuals on that day, in that particular instance, and you really have to establish what they were feeling emotionally,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Both of Arbery\u2019s parents say they\u2019re pleased with the prosecutors\u2019 case and feel confident the evidence will produce a guilty verdict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey lived among us,\u201d said Arbery\u2019s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, of the defendants. \u201cAnd they lived with those mindsets every day among people like us. And they really didn\u2019t like people who looked like myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friday, Travis McMichael\u2019s former boss Joe Mandela testified that on the day of the shooting, McMichael called to tell him he shot and killed someone outside of his house in self-defense. Under oath, Mandela said when the video of Arbery\u2019s killing came to light, he was \u201cshocked and upset\u201d that Travis McMichael told him a lie.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsav.com\/news\/national-news\/ex-cop-who-killed-daunte-wright-to-learn-sentence\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tJudge sentences cop who killed Daunte Wright to 2 years\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to social media evidence presented earlier in the week, using a racial expletive, Travis McMichael told a friend he enjoyed that job because there was \u201cnot a Black person in sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a firearm investigator from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation brought forth the shotgun Travis McMichael used to kill Arbery and presented more photos of his blood-soaked t-shirt. The evidence prompted Arbery\u2019s father and aunt to leave the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said they\u2019ll need two hours for closing arguments on Monday, and attorneys for the three defendants each asked for as much as two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Family members said they are planning commemoration events for later in the week, no matter the state of the trial.
