{"id":29183,"date":"2022-02-27T04:42:13","date_gmt":"2022-02-27T04:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=29183"},"modified":"2022-02-27T04:42:13","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T04:42:13","slug":"ny-democrats-gerrymandering-could-backfire-in-moderate-area-of-queens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/02\/27\/ny-democrats-gerrymandering-could-backfire-in-moderate-area-of-queens\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Democrats&#8217; gerrymandering could backfire in moderate area of Queens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>New York Democrats could see their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/03\/lawsuit-filed-against-hochul-democratic-lawmakers-on-new-congressional-state-maps\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">politically and racially motivated redistricting plan<\/a> partially backfire in a moderate section of Queens \u2014 where Republican politicos see an opening in a redrawn state Senate district.<\/p>\n<p>Senate District 16\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latfor.state.ny.us\/maps\/2022senate\/sen016.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new borders<\/a> include middle-class, conservative neighborhoods like College Point and Whitestone \u2014 and now <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latfor.state.ny.us\/maps\/2012s\/SD_map_rep_16.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">does not include<\/a> tony Jamaica Estates.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime state Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, 83, represents the area today, but challenger Stefano Forte, 24, is looking for an upset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a seat that actually has the potential to have a Republican take office,\u201d Forte said.<\/p>\n<p>The lifelong Queens native plans to run a tough-on-crime campaign against Stavisky, a criminal-justice reformer. Other priorities include protecting single-family zoning, a small-business tax holiday, and a $10,000 subsidized \u201cmarriage loan\u201d for New Yorkers who tie the knot and stay in-state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an opportunity district for the right candidate,\u201d according to one former Republican lawmaker who asked not to be named. \u201cThe district could be competitive especially on crime and education issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just 33.2 percent of voters within the old boundaries voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020, but 41.3 percent of voters within the new ones did, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newyork.redistrictingandyou.org\/?districtType=sd&amp;propA=current_2012&amp;propB=sen_latfor_202200201&amp;selected=-73.825,40.745#%26map=11.5\/40.7473\/-73.8322\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a City University of New York redistricting mapping tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/220224_forte_jcrice_03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/220224_forte_jcrice_03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682\" alt=\"Lifelong Queens native Stefano Forte hopes to upset State Sen. Wice, senior fellow at New York Law School\u2019s New York Census and Redistricting Institute, said. \u201cThe population requirements, the need to draw the proper numbers of minority districts \u2014 this all involves a balancing act of competing criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forte faces a gigantic cash deficit in his race against the longtime incumbent: he reported about $10,000 on hand as of January, compared to Stavisky\u2019s roughly $229,000.<\/p>\n<p>Stavisky was first elected to the State Senate in 1999, following the death of her husband, State Sen.
