Forever grateful.&quot;\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/news\/2022\/03\/15\/cyntoia-brown-long-bill-haslam-speak-prison-reform\/7036491001\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">The highlight of my week was talking\u00a0with former<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/news\/2022\/03\/15\/cyntoia-brown-long-bill-haslam-speak-prison-reform\/7036491001\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/news\/2022\/03\/15\/cyntoia-brown-long-bill-haslam-speak-prison-reform\/7036491001\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Cyntoia Brown-Long about their first public event together since he granted her clemency in 2019. They took part in a discussion Tuesday on criminal justice reform at Vanderbilt University.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Brown-Long was tried as an adult in the Tennessee criminal justice system and found guilty of first-degree murder when she was 16. She had\u00a0been the victim of human trafficking and shot a man during a sex exchange. Her fate was a\u00a0mandatory 51 years in prison before she could be eligible for parole. Haslam granted her freedom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Before I worked for Knox News, I had the opportunity to meet and interview Cyntoia after she was released from prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">I have been thankful to maintain an ongoing relationship with her and keep up with her life post-incarceration over the past couple of years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/news\/crime\/2021\/08\/05\/cyntoia-brown-long-now-2021-since-walking-out-of-tennessee-prison\/8032128002\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">It is\u00a0fulfilling to see the redemption in Cyntoia&#8217;s life<\/a> and how it has led to deeper conversations around restorative justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Before becoming a reporter, I volunteered for\u00a0organizations advocating against mass incarceration, and I&#8217;m passionate about the cause. Under Tennessee law, a minor has to serve at least 51 years of a life sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Just two weeks ago, I sat in Knox County juvenile court and witnessed a judge&#8217;s decision to try a 15-year-old as an adult.\u00a0It&#8217;s happening all across our state.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The movement to reform juvenile sentencing has gained momentum in recent years as scientific research has revealed differences between teen and adult brains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Brown-Long\u2019s case didn\u2019t end up changing state law.\u00a0However, the\u00a0Tennessee Supreme Court is considering whether to end strict life sentences for juveniles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">If Tennessee&#8217;s sentencing laws are found to be unconstitutional, it could provide a path out of prison for all the other Tennesseans sentenced to life as juveniles.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Cyntoia told me\u00a0she hopes to one day talk with Gov. Bill Lee about criminal justice reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I hope to have a very open and honest conversation about the way things are currently in Tennessee.
