Now, TikTok users are turning to the \u201cMultidimensional Anger Test\u201d as a new way to understand a different emotion: anger.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nA quick search of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/angertest\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">#AngerTest<\/a> on TikTok will likely show you hundreds of videos of users sharing their test results. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idrlabs.com\/anger\/test.php\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Multidimensional Anger Test<\/a> comes from IDRLabs\u2014a site providing different individual personality assessment tests\u2014and consists of 38 questions that ask you to reflect on your experiences with anger.\u00a0It\u2019s meant to test your susceptibility to the feeling.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-6\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nBut there\u2019s no guarantee that the test is going to be \u201caccurate\u201d for you. It can, however, help you reflect on your own experiences, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelharlich.com\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rachel Harlich, LMSW<\/a>, a psychotherapist based in Brooklyn, New York, told Verywell.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-8\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nSpecifically for herself as a trauma therapist, Harlich said, she thinks the test can act as a point on a path toward self-knowledge. For example, upon seeing your results, she would encourage you to ask, \u201cWhat have I experienced in my life to be angry about?\u201d The test can spark reflection, and become more than a set-in-stone character description.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-13\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nThe test can also help us reflect on the purpose of anger itself. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heidelberg.edu\/directory\/aaron-sell\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">Aaron Sell, PhD<\/a>, professor of psychology &amp; criminology at Heidelberg University in Ohio, told Verywell that anger has evolved to help us communicate, recalibrate boundaries, and solve problems.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-what-is-the-multidimensional-anger-test\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-15\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> What Is the Multidimensional Anger Test? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nThe test evaluates five \u201cdimensions\u201d of the emotion:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li><strong>Anger Arousal:<\/strong> Frequency, magnitude, and duration of angry responses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anger Spectrum:<\/strong> The range of situations likely to trigger an angry response<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hostile Outlook:<\/strong> How cynically\/suspiciously one views the world<\/li>\n<li><strong>External Anger: <\/strong>Tendency to \u201ctake anger out\u201d on external surroundings<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internal Anger:<\/strong> Tendency to internalize anger and\/or not share it openly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<iframe id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-20-iframe\" class=\"mntl-sc-block-embed--iframe lazyload\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" frameborder=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" title=\"\" don=\"\" you=\"\" ever=\"\" get=\"\" angry=\"\" data-expand=\"300\" data-src=\"\/embed?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tiktok.com%2F%40americassweetheart555%2Fvideo%2F7070462600873561386%3Fis_from_webapp%3D1%26sender_device%3Dpc%26web_id6982996530111464965&amp;id=mntl-sc-block_1-0-20-iframe&amp;options=e30%3D&amp;docId=5222322\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-22\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nThe site says the test is based on psychologist Judith Siegel\u2019s Multidimensional Anger Inventory (MAI), which was developed in 1986.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/> Because researchers have thought anger and hostility might be linked to high blood pressure and coronary heart disease, MAI has also been used to evaluate certain health risks.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-24\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nAt the same time, Sell added, there are many other ways experts evaluate anger. But because this TikTok-popularized test relies on self-reporting it should not be used for diagnostic purposes.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-26\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nSo even though IDRLabs\u2019s tests claim to be \u201cbased on peer-reviewed scientific research,\u201d that should be taken with a grain of salt. If anything, Harlich added, the quizzes should be taken for fun and personal reflection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-28-iframe\" class=\"mntl-sc-block-embed--iframe lazyload\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" frameborder=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" title=\"Anger Test\" data-expand=\"300\" data-src=\"\/embed?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tiktok.com%2F%40rapidd.z%2Fvideo%2F7069947623536561454%3Fis_from_webapp%3D1%26sender_device%3Dpc%26web_id6982996530111464965&amp;id=mntl-sc-block_1-0-28-iframe&amp;options=e30%3D&amp;docId=5222322\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-anger-does-not-equal-aggression\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-30\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> Anger Does Not Equal Aggression <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-31\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nThe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/anger\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">American Psychological Association<\/a> (APA) defines anger as\u00a0\u201can emotion characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong.\u201d Even though everyone feels anger at some point, it sometimes gets a bad reputation.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-33\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nCalls to \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/anger\/control\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">control anger before it controls you<\/a>,\u201d as well as the idea of \u201canger management,\u201d can warp our understanding of the emotion\u2019s evolutionary purpose, Sell said, which is to encourage us to communicate with others and find solutions to problems.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-35\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nHarlich agreed. Anger \u201cis a very stigmatized emotion,\u201d she said. \u201cBut sometimes it can be mobilizing in a way that\u2019s helpful. Sometimes anger can tell us where our boundaries are, where we wouldn\u2019t have known otherwise, and that somebody has crossed or violated them.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-40\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nSell\u2019s work in evolutionary psychology helped him develop the recalibration theory of anger, which argues that anger arises to help us readjust, or recalibrate, agreements, and boundaries. This \u201crecalibration\u201d does not always have to come out as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/aggression\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">aggression<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-42\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nStill, when anger goes unregulated, it can certainly lead to aggression, Sell added, and even turn into hatred.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-44\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nHealth experts have also suggested that frequent feelings of anger and hostility may increase one\u2019s risk for cardiovascular disease. Recent research suggests that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/distress-tolerance-2797294\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">distress tolerance<\/a>, or one\u2019s ability to manage stressful emotions, moderates the relationship between anger and blood pressure.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-46\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nBut the jury is still out on the connection between anger and cardiovascular disease, precisely <em>because<\/em> emotions like anger are so difficult to reliably measure.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"4\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-49\" class=\"comp theme-exclamation mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-callout mntl-block\" data-tracking-id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout\" data-tracking-container=\"true\">\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-heading_1-0-1\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block-callout-heading mntl-text-block\">\nWhat This Means For You<\/h3>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-body_1-0-1\" class=\"comp expert-content mntl-sc-block-callout-body mntl-text-block\">\n<p>Anger is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/aggression\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">not the same<\/a> as aggression. It can also be a helpful emotion that guides us in expressing feelings, finding solutions to problems, and even feeling closer to others who we work through anger with. What are they angry about? If they are angry more of the time of other people, why is that potentially the case?\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-53\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nWorking through these kinds of questions in therapy, Harlich added, can be very healing. Maybe in past relationships, her client wasn\u2019t allowed to be angry or feared losing a relationship if they expressed anger. \u201cBeing in session and able to feel anger, and having the therapist accept that anger, can be a \u2018corrective emotional experience,\u2019\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nWorking through tough discussions that involve anger, Sell added, can also help you end up feeling closer to the person you originally felt angry with.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-60\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n\u201cPeople like to point out that they\u2019re irrational when they\u2019re angry, but they\u2019re actually not in all ways,\u201d Sell said, partly because it opens the lines of communication.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-62\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n\u201cThe most common thing people do when they\u2019re angry is rapidly communicate, respond to apologies, and respond to the arguments the other person makes,\u201d he said.
