The team\u00a0formed about 40 years ago, and its membership has waxed and waned in the decades since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The team all but dissolved during the pandemic, said coach Hunter Noble, a former logging team competitor who now manages UNR\u2019s Whittell Forest and Wildlife Area, a swath of forest in Washoe Valley that serves as a living lab for research and instruction. But over the past several months, the team has grown its membership back up to seven students.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe goal of logging sports is to preserve some tradition of the understanding of the way things used to be, but we just do it for fun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The close-knit group gathers once per week in a vacant lot on the university\u2019s Agricultural Experiment Station, just east of campus.\u00a0The lot backs up to North Wells Avenue, so drivers sometimes see the students sawing, throwing and chopping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">A little harder to see is the team\u2019s dedication to less physically demanding aspects of the sport, such as identifying trees and cones and calculating distances and angles in the woods.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:454px\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/03\/24\/PREN\/e52178e3-c457-4745-9194-83a41e5551ed-REN_NEVADA_LOGGERS_03.jpg?width=660&amp;height=454&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/03\/24\/PREN\/e52178e3-c457-4745-9194-83a41e5551ed-REN_NEVADA_LOGGERS_03.jpg?width=1320&amp;height=908&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nevada Loggers team member Vanessa Arias works on her axe-throwing technique during a practice session Wednesday.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The parcel is peppered with logs of varying sizes\u00a0donated by private landowners and\u00a0tree removal companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Most donations are Jeffrey and lodgepole pines damaged by drought and bark beetles, said Sarah Bisbing, the team\u2019s adviser and an assistant professor at UNR. Wood they don\u2019t use for practice gets cut into firewood and sold for $200 a cord to help purchase equipment and travel expenses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cMost logging teams aren\u2019t picky about what they cut into because it\u2019s all donated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Bisbing was a member of the logging team at the University of Illinois and University of Montana and coached the team at California Polytechnic State University, \u201cnotoriously one of the best logging teams in the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Bisbing, who also is director of the Whittell Forest and Wildlife Area, said the sport \u201cwas kind of my first foray into gaining confidence through strength-building activities. \u2026 It was my first opportunity to not be treated as a petite city girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:315px\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/03\/24\/PREN\/7fc81451-56dc-496d-b688-70149948509a-REN_NEVADA_LOGGERS_05.jpg?width=300&amp;height=315&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/03\/24\/PREN\/7fc81451-56dc-496d-b688-70149948509a-REN_NEVADA_LOGGERS_05.jpg?width=600&amp;height=630&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nevada Loggers team adviser Hunter Noble wields an axe during a practice session in Reno on Wednesday.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Competing as a petite female, Bisbing felt she overcame stereotypes that the sport is \u201cmale-dominated and masculine.\u201d She sees the UNR team defying that stereotype as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAs forestry has changed and become more diverse and inclusive, so have logging teams,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Come for the axe\u00a0throwing, stay for the people<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When Arias showed up to her first practice, she didn\u2019t feel like she fit in. She was a young Latina from the farming community of Yerington and a criminal justice major who had never handled an axe\u00a0or chainsaw.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">She thought:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m the only person who\u2019s not a forestry major. I shouldn\u2019t be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But she\u2019d seen an ad for the club\u00a0and, \u201cThey said they were going to throw axes, and I thought, \u2018That sounds fun.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">There was no axe\u00a0throwing that first day. She tried chopping but found it scary each time the axe\u00a0blade struck near her feet. Then, she sat with other team members and peeled logs \u2014\u00a0bark can contain dirt and small rocks that damage axes and saws \u2014\u00a0for about two hours. Her birthday is coming up, and when her mom asked what she wanted as a gift, she asked for a throwing axe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Senior Airica Gallaspy is another surprise addition on the team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When she first heard about Nevada Loggers, she blew it off, thinking it sounded ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But after taking a class taught by Bisbing, she went to a practice \u201cand immediately fell in love with it,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cI like getting to run heavy dangerous equipment I would not have had an opportunity to use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Gallaspy grew up in Reno, leading \u201can indoor city life despite the fact I was the crunchy granola one in my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_cp\" aria-label=\"Top Stories from the West\" data-c-cta=\"MUST READS\">\n<div class=\"gnt_em_cp_cw\"><img class=\"gnt_em_cp_cw_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/03\/23\/PVCS\/f7792ac2-ab8e-4516-8a53-76e37e5717d9-IMG_9362.jpeg?crop=959,719,x0,y279&amp;width=258&amp;height=193&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/03\/23\/PVCS\/f7792ac2-ab8e-4516-8a53-76e37e5717d9-IMG_9362.jpeg?crop=959,719,x0,y279&amp;width=516&amp;height=386&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When she told her parents she\u2019d joined Nevada Loggers, \u201cthey all kind of looked at me with their jaws hanging.
