Tularosa High School Senior Lexi Gallegos won a\u00a0$40,000 scholarship from national non-profit the College Board\u00a0to go to the college or university of her choice.<\/p>\n
Gallegos is planning to attend New Mexico State University in the fall as a criminal justice major.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I want to become a game and fish warden, so I\u00a0need a criminal justice degree to obtain that career,” Gallegos said. “Then I’ll probably major in wildlife biology.”<\/p>\n
Gallegos is active in Future Farmers of America (FFA) and National Honor Society.<\/p>\n
She qualified for the FFA State Convention in June held on campus at NMSU.<\/p>\n
Gallegos is also active\u00a0in community service projects at\u00a0Tularosa High School as well as around the community.<\/p>\n
She helped set up up the Christmas Eve Luminarias around Tularosa and assisted in\u00a0serving the Thanksgiving lunch at Tularosa Elementary School.<\/p>\n COVID-19 presented a unique challenge, Gallegos said, for her studies and local involvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n “High school has especially been different, especially being quarantined,” Gallegos said. “It was definitely somewhat of a struggle trying to\u00a0keep up with your work and making sure you have everything done.”<\/p>\n More about local students:<\/strong>Mescalero Apache students study air quality on Mescalero Reservation<\/a><\/p>\n But she was still able to win the College Board’s\u00a0BigFuture\u00a0Scholarship which is currently open for members of the Class of\u00a02023.<\/p>\n\n The College Board BigFuture\u00a0Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship that also includes funding for books and housing.<\/p>\n BigFuture is The College Board’s\u00a0online guide helping\u00a0students to plan for life after high school, according to The College Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n The BigFuture Scholarship awards $500 to $40,000 scholarships to students who complete a series of post-secondary steps.<\/p>\n To qualify, students must\u00a0research and add\u00a0six or more colleges to their list of potential schools, practice for the SAT using the Official SATPractice via Khan Academy, and explore scholarships to strengthen the list of colleges and universities for which they plan to apply.<\/p>\n\n The must also complete the\u00a0Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, process and apply to at least two colleges or universities for which the student would like to attend.<\/p>\n There is no income requirement to apply for this scholarship.<\/p>\n For more information about The College Board’s BigFuture Scholarship, visit\u00a0pages.collegeboard.org\/big-future-scholarships<\/a>\u00a0or call\u00a0866-630-9305.<\/p>\n Nicole Maxwell can be contacted by email at nmaxwell@alamogordonews.com, by phone at 575-415-6605 or on Twitter at @nicmaxreporter.
