{"id":30732,"date":"2022-04-14T07:47:16","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T07:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=30732"},"modified":"2022-04-14T07:47:16","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T07:47:16","slug":"us-governments-misguided-war-on-drugs-the-daily-evergreen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/04\/14\/us-governments-misguided-war-on-drugs-the-daily-evergreen\/","title":{"rendered":"US government\u2019s misguided War on Drugs \u2013 The Daily Evergreen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Should weed really be enemy in War on Drugs?&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"photowrap\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"modal-photo photooverlay\" data-story-id=\"132574\" data-photo-id=\"132779\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyevergreen.com\/132574\/opinion\/opinion-u-s-governments-misguided-war-on-drugs\/#photo\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyevergreen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/War-on-drugs-illustration-01-Artboard-1-900x506.png\" alt=\"Under+the+Controlled+Substance+Act+of+1970%2C+marijuana+is+listed+as+a+Schedule+I+controlled+substance%2C+meaning+it+poses+very+high+risk+for+addiction+and+has+few+medical+benefits.\" style=\"width:100%\" class=\"catboxphoto feature-image\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"captionboxmittop\">\n<p class=\"photocredit\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyevergreen.com\/staff_name\/mikayla-finnerty\/\" class=\"creditline\" rel=\"noopener\">MIKAYLA FINNERTY<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"photocaption\">Under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970, marijuana is listed as a Schedule I controlled substance, meaning it poses very high risk for addiction and has few medical benefits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 1, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/3617\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to remove cannabis from the list of scheduled substances and eliminate criminal charges associated with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MORE Act, however, is<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/icymi-us-house-passes-recreational-marijuana-bill\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not expected to pass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the U.S. Senate due to its own comprehensive bill on cannabis reform called <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.democrats.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/CAOA%20Detailed%20Summary%20-.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The bill seeks to impose a 25% excise tax on cannabis products, which many experts claim is too high, resulting in a new round of failed reform initiatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of the writing of this column, 18 states as well as Washington, D.C. and Guam have legalized recreational weed, and 39 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized medical marijuana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington state is among those states that have legalized both in its state legislature. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular belief, the state did not go up in flames or turn into Woodstock. We are still alive and well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the majority of states have legalized cannabis, it is still federally considered a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no accepted medical applications and a high risk of abuse, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-information\/drug-scheduling#:~:text=Schedule%20I%20drugs%2C%20substances%2C%20or,)%2C%20methaqualone%2C%20and%20peyote.\" rel=\"noopener\">Drug Enforcement Administration.<\/a> It sits among lysergic acid diethylamide (commonly known as LSD), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (commonly known as MDMA, ecstasy or molly) and heroin, under the<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-information\/csa\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Controlled Substance Act of 1970<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 50 years ago, President Richard Nixon signed the CSA and publicly announced the War on Drugs, declaring drug abuse \u201cpublic enemy No. 1\u201d\u00a0and primarily focusing on deterring the production, distribution and consumption of cannabis. Ironically, though, the U.S. was in the throes of the Vietnam War at the time, so was cannabis really public enemy number one, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nixon? Or did you start the War on Drugs in order to <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/other\/race-war-drugs\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ensnare people of color <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/reimagining-prison-webumentary\/the-past-is-never-dead\/drug-war-confessional\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-war leftists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the War on Drugs raged on, weed became its poster child. As a result, politicians were afraid to address the issue of cannabis legalization because they might have appeared soft on crime and subsequently lose votes, said Roman Scovel, junior psychology and criminal justice double major.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The War on Drugs is just another attempt at prohibition, said Mary Stohr, professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. And we know how prohibition ended \u2013 <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/roaring-twenties\/prohibition\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by criminalizing the honest and enriching the criminal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long are we going to play this game? Why does the U.S. government continue waging a war against weed? What is it going to take to federally legalize it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, I am not saying that cannabis cannot be abused.<\/span> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/marijuana\/health-effects\/addiction.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It certainly can<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, I mean, you can also abuse the 12-pack of Bud Light at your local supermarket, the quadruple shot latte at your nearest Starbucks or the pack of Marlboros from the corner convenience store.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the four things mentioned above, only one has medical merit \u2026 and it is the only one that is federally illegal. There<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/medical-marijuana-faq\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a myriad of empirical research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting the therapeutic use of cannabis. For example, the FDA approved cannabis for the treatment of two forms of epilepsy, Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, there is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ongoing research<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding its possible treatment of diseases and ailments, including Alzheimer\u2019s disease, Crohn\u2019s disease, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and cachexia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the \u201cgreatest amount of evidence for the therapeutic effect of cannabis relates to its ability to reduce chronic pain, nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy and spasticity from MS,\u201d said <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/medical-marijuana-faq\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, substance abuse specialist at the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s Perelman School of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, cannabis research is being hampered because the DEA\u00a0still considers it a Schedule I drug, which requires researchers to have special licensing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the science.
