Among the accolades, Professor <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/faculty\/profile\/sp5mm\/1200266\" rel=\"noopener\">Saikrishna Prakash<\/a> was part of an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ali.org\/media\/filer_public\/31\/27\/312774df-88a5-4cbe-b6b0-0fd036cd3a95\/principles_for_eca_reform.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">American Law Institute project<\/a> exploring reforms to the Electoral Count Act.<\/p>\n<p>The group, co-chaired by New York University law professor Bob Bauer \u201976, unanimously agreed that Congress should reform the ECA, passed in 1887, in time for the 2024 election. The project proposed principles \u201cin an effort to contribute to a constitutionally sound bipartisan consensus in Congress.\u201d Among the suggestions were limiting objections to electoral votes grounded in explicit constitutional requirements; moving the Electoral College meeting date to account for recounts and legal challenges; and affirming that states cannot disregard votes or electors contrary to laws in place on Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis group shares our commitment to focus on correcting the deep and serious structural problems in our system of counting and certifying ballots for President and Vice President, and we are pleased to note that many of the areas the American Law Institute members have selected parallel our group\u2019s efforts,\u201d U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Joe Manchin <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.collins.senate.gov\/newsroom\/senators-collins-manchin-welcome-new-input-from-group-of-election-experts-and-legal-scholars\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a joint statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prakash is the James Monroe Distinguished Professor of Law and Albert Clark Tate, Jr., Professor of Law.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tRiley Joins Miller Center Initiative<\/h2>\n<p>Professor <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/faculty\/profile\/mf9c\/1202931\" rel=\"noopener\">Margaret Foster Riley<\/a> is co-directing the new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/millercenter.org\/health-care-policy\/about-initiative\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Care Policy Initiative<\/a> at UVA\u2019s Miller Center with presidential history professor Guian McKee. The initiative focuses on domestic health policy and global health security. Riley, McKee and J. Stephen Morrison, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, discussed the rapidly shifting public health approach to the pandemic at the initiative\u2019s debut event, \u201cThe Fight Against COVID: Has the U.S. Entered a New Normal?,\u201d on March 30.<\/p>\n<p>Riley is the Dorothy Danforth Compton Professor at the Miller Center, Professor of Public Health Sciences at the School of Medicine, Professor of Public Policy at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, and director of the Law School\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/academics\/program\/animal-law\" rel=\"noopener\">Animal Law Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"embedded-video\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The fight against COVID: Has the U.S. entered a new normal?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_4pEwApWV1E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>\n\tJournal Taps Cahn as Editor<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Naomi Cahn\" class=\"right\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/system\/files\/news\/2022\/cahn-175px-circle.jpg\" width=\"175\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel named Professor <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/faculty\/profile\/nrc8g\/2915359\" rel=\"noopener\">Naomi Cahn<\/a> editor of the ACTEC Law Journal on March 29. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.actec.org\/actec-appoints-new-law-journal-editor\/\" rel=\"noopener\">According to a press release<\/a>, the ACTEC, comprised of 2,400 lawyers and law professors worldwide, strives for the improvement and reform of probate, trust and tax laws, and procedures and professional practice standards, and offers technical comments with regard to legislation and regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Cahn, co-director of the Law School\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/academics\/program\/family-law-center\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Law Center<\/a>, is the Justice Anthony M. Kennedy Distinguished Professor of Law and Nancy L. Buc \u201969 Research Professor in Democracy and Equity.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tTeam Reaches Trial Advocacy Finals<\/h2>\n<p>Second-year students <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.virginia.edu\/news\/202111\/natalia-heguaburo-23-sees-lawyering-tool-equity\" rel=\"noopener\">Natalia Heguaburo<\/a>, Daniel Liu, Katrina Meyer and Daniel Richardson placed second in the eighth annual Estrella Trial Advocacy Competition, which culminated April 3. Richardson said this was the furthest a UVA team has ever advanced in the 14-team competition. The tournament, co-hosted by George Washington University and Estrella law firm, was held in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. Anumba\u2019s personal best is 57.36 meters. The UVA group recently held a discussion on the right balance between criminal justice reform and public safety.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t1L Named Diversity Fellow<\/h2>\n<p>Zain Imam \u201924 will work as a summer associate at Baker Bott\u2019s Houston office as a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerbotts.com\/news\/2022\/03\/baker-botts-selects-2022-diversity-fellowship-recipients\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Diversity Fellow<\/a>. The fellowship recipients, announced March 30, were selected by a panel comprised of members of the firm\u2019s Diversity &amp; Inclusion Committee.
