Instead of giving away ice cream on 4\/20, Ben & Jerry’s is encouraging its fans to call on the Senate<\/a> to pass the\u00a0Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act<\/a>, which would legalize cannabis on the federal level, expunge the records of nonviolent offenders and fund social and criminal-justice programs in communities most impacted by overpolicing.<\/p>\n

“The Black and Brown community have borne the high cost of cannabis prohibition and the system of mass incarceration that it has fueled, while white men reap the financial benefits of the legalized cannabis industry,” Chris Miller, Ben & Jerry’s global head of activism strategy, said in a\u00a0press release<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Visitors to the Ben & Jerry’s site<\/a> can join the ACLU and sign a prewritten letter urging the Senate to pass the MORE Act. The bill cleared the House in early April, mostly along party lines, but it faces a tougher battle in the upper house.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Three-quarters of US states have legal marijuana: The recreational market alone hit nearly $15 billion in 2021 and is on target to\u00a0surpass $25 billion<\/a>\u00a0by 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which states have legalized medical marijuana?

As of April 2022, 37 states<\/a> have legalized the medical use of cannabis: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia. <\/p>\n

In addition, the District of Columbia and the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands have all legalized medical marijuana. <\/p>\n

Each jurisdiction has its own criteria regarding what conditions cannabis can be prescribed for, at what amounts and what the process is for issuing medical marijuana licenses to qualified residents.<\/p>\n

Which states have legalized recreational marijuana?<\/h2>\n

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures<\/a>, 18 states have legalized the adult use of marijuana for recreational purposes (and medical uses, as well): Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition, recreational cannabis is legal in Washington, DC, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.<\/p>\n
