{"id":31111,"date":"2022-04-25T19:52:40","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T19:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=31111"},"modified":"2022-04-25T19:52:40","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T19:52:40","slug":"omara-gop-colleagues-sound-alarm-on-latest-pro-criminal-policies-advancing-in-albany-republicans-note-that-the-action-by-senate-democrats-is-being-taken-during-crime-victims-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/04\/25\/omara-gop-colleagues-sound-alarm-on-latest-pro-criminal-policies-advancing-in-albany-republicans-note-that-the-action-by-senate-democrats-is-being-taken-during-crime-victims-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"O\u2019Mara, GOP colleagues sound alarm on latest pro-criminal policies advancing in Albany: Republicans note that the action by Senate Democrats is being taken during Crime Victims\u2019 Rights Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<p>\n            Another day in Albany, another set of pro-criminal policies pushed by one-party rule.           <\/p>\n<div>\n      <!-- theme template:  --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><b><span><span>Albany<\/span><\/span><\/b><b><span><span>, <\/span><\/span><\/b><b><span><span>N.Y.<\/span><\/span><\/b><b><span><span>, April 25\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span>State Senator Tom O\u2019Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) today joined several of his Senate Republican colleagues on the Senate Codes Committee to sound the alarm on the latest pro-criminal policies being advanced by the Senate\u2019s Democrat majority in <\/span><\/span><span><span>Albany<\/span><\/span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In today\u2019s committee meeting, Senate Democrats approved two pieces of legislation that would erase criminal records from public view and provide no protections for victims or law-abiding New Yorkers.\u00a0 The so-called \u201cClean Slate\u201d measure (S1553C) would seal felony records seven years after a sentence is complete and after three years for misdemeanors.\u00a0 A second bill (S5518A) would create an \u201cOffice of Expungement\u201d within the state Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) specifically to help facilitate the sealing and expungement of criminal convictions. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>O\u2019Mara said, \u201cAnother day in <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>Albany<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>, another set of pro-criminal policies pushed by one-party rule. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>New York<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span> is facing a crime crisis the likes of which we haven\u2019t seen in years. The crisis, caused by Democrats\u2019 cashless bail and other soft-on-crime policies, could be stopped today if they stopped pushing a radical, pro-criminal agenda. Today\u2019s actions once again prove that Democrats care more about protecting violent felons and dangerous individuals than they do victims and law-abiding New Yorkers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>O\u2019Mara joined Senators Anthony Palumbo, ranking Republican on the Codes Committee, Fred Akshar and Patrick Gallivan voting against the legislation. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>A new <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>Siena Research Institute<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span> poll out today shows that New Yorkers view crime as the most important issue confronting the state. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In 2019, Senate Democrats completely reversed years of public safety progress by turning the state criminal justice system on its head. For years, the passage of dangerous cashless bail laws, discovery law changes, parole \u201creforms,\u201d and other pro-criminal policies has become commonplace in Albany.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Senate Republican action sounding the alarm again today builds upon the conference\u2019s continuous calls to restore public safety in <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>New York<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>.\u00a0 Their public protection plan, part of a Take Back New York agenda released earlier this year, includes:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><b><span><span><span>Protecting Those Who Protect Us:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Invest in law enforcement;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Provide them with the support they need to make our communities safe and serve those in need; and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Fight Democrat efforts to demonize and \u201cDefund the Police.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><b><span><span><span>Rejecting Dangerous \u201cReforms\u201d like Cashless Bail:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf End cashless bail, restore judicial discretion and reject dangerous Democrat proposals to erase criminal records;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf Require state agencies to be transparent about the effects of public safety policies; and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf Fix unworking discovery and \u201cspeedy trial\u201d laws that have turned our justice system into a revolving door for repeat and violent offenders.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u00a0<b><span><span><span>Reforming the Broken Parole System:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Recenter the Parole process around the protection and rights of crime victims and their families;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Ensure that cop-killers, serial killers, child killers, and other dangerous murderers can NEVER be released; and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Reject dangerous Democrat proposals to weaken the Parole System.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u00a0<b><span><span><span>Passing a Victims\u2019 Justice Agenda:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Heighten penalties for violent and repeat offenders, as well as hate crimes;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u25cf\u00a0Invest in proven mental health, addiction, homeless, and victims\u2019 programs and services;
