This
\nwarning emanates from incidents that occurred in KwaZakhele and New Brighton at
\nthe weekend where people were attacked and died at the hands of the community
\nin these respective areas.<\/p>\n
It
\nis alleged that on Friday evening, May 6 at about 21:30, SAPS KwaZakhele
\nattended to a complaint of mob justice in Tubali Street. A 28-year-old man was
\nfound badly assaulted and sustained burn wounds to his body. The victim was
\ntaken to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. A case of murder is
\nunder investigation.<\/p>\n
Also
\non Friday at approximately 18:40, it is alleged that a bystander at a crime
\nscene attempted to steal the cell phone of a murdered victim when other
\nbystanders caught him and beat him with stones.<\/p>\n
Police
\nspokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that as the police arrived to attend
\nto the murder scene, the crowd dispersed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The
\nbeaten person was taken in a critical condition to hospital. A case of
\nattempted murder is under investigation,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Naidu
\nadded that in another incident, the body of an unknown man was found on
\nSaturday evening at about 22:30, lying in Nqadini Street in New Brighton with
\nburn wounds and a stab wound to his body. “Circumstances relating to his
\nmurder is unknown. The man was taken to hospital by a passing ambulance. A case
\nof murder is under investigation,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Acting
\nNelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brig. Thandiswa Kupiso, has strongly
\ncondemned these senseless attacks and warned that those responsible for these
\nvigilante attacks will be hunted down and arrested.<\/p>\n
“Mob
\njustice is not the solution and will not be tolerated. The communities are
\nsupposed to be the eyes and ears of the police and are required to report
\ncriminals to the police for further action and not to be the law themselves.
\nMob justice or vigilantism is tantamount to crime and those arrested will face
\nthe judicial system. We will not condone such callous acts of crime. We appeal
\nto the communities to allow the justice system to deal with perpetrators and
\nbring them to book,” Kupiso said.<\/p>\n
