Usually, this means paying some amount of money for bail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">These individuals are legally innocent, and the\u00a0majority are<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/YdiUCqxpKYfLVzy5wCXDbYx?domain=t.nylas.com\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\"> accused of non-violent crimes<\/a>\u00a0\u2014but when <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/05\/09\/what-alternatives-primary-elections-ohio-tyler-fisher-marc-hyden-jd-vance-voter-turnout\/9676233002\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">they can&#8217;t afford bail<\/a>,\u00a0they languish in jails for weeks and even months on end, upending their entire life.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:500px\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/05\/10\/NCOD\/51127d60-ea17-4ebe-b925-14a226598ae4-john_rush.png?width=503&amp;height=500&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"John Rush is the founder and CEO of CleanTurn and 180 Demo and the owner of ThirdWay Cafe in Columbus.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The original purpose of the bail system was to make sure individuals show up for their trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Recent studies, however,\u00a0have shown that\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/2DflCrkqLRCwW1RvJc4vSWJ?domain=t.nylas.com\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">alternative solutions<\/a>\u00a0like court reminders are more than enough. Yet here in Ohio, we maintain a system that lets wealthy individuals pay their way out\u00a0\u2013\u00a0while those with less means sit in cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">For employers like myself, that\u2019s an issue. If we have an employee arrested for a minor infraction, they might eventually be sentenced to probation or community service, with no jail time. They might eventually be proven innocent. There\u2019s no reason that person can\u2019t stay a<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/05\/04\/opinion-jpmorgan-chase-program-works-those-criminal-records\/7440569001\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\"> productive employee<\/a> at CleanTurn (or anywhere else) while they await trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">More:<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/05\/05\/what-impact-would-community-safety-amendment-have-ohio-bail-reform\/9634010002\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|spike click:14|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Yost: &#8216;Fresh helping of injustice&#8217; served when violent criminals out on low bail reoffend<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">People who can\u2019t show up <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/03\/24\/what-impact-does-bail-system-have-health-ohio-policy-matters-ohio\/7133713001\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">for work lose their jobs,<\/a> and businesses have to spend additional time and resources recruiting and retraining. Extensive research has shown that\u00a0any time spent in jail can<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/t8-_Cv2xPoUOR2n6VhAmWjk?domain=t.nylas.com\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\"> substantially increase recidivism<\/a> years after the disposition of that case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/05\/05\/what-impact-would-community-safety-amendment-have-ohio-bail-reform\/9634010002\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Proponents of our current bail system<\/a> argue that it\u2019s protecting Ohio\u2019s communities. The reality is that holding thousands of poor individuals pre-trial, and letting dangerous defendants pay to go free, puts our communities at risk.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">More:<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/05\/05\/what-impact-would-community-safety-amendment-have-ohio-bail-reform\/9634010002\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|spike click:21|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Yost: &#8216;Fresh helping of injustice&#8217; served when violent criminals out on low bail reoffend<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Our bail system is also incredibly expensive. It costs taxpayers\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/hRNwCwpyQmH02AE1rc1x3bD?domain=t.nylas.com\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">$65 per day<\/a>\u00a0to hold someone in jail, compared to just $5 per day for supervised release. And I\u2019m not alone;\u00a075% of voters agree\u00a0that we need to make real changes to our criminal justice system. Making our bail determinations based on actual <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/01\/19\/what-impact-could-bail-reform-ohio-have-domestic-violence-victims\/6531118001\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">risk to public safety<\/a> \u2013 not ability to pay \u2013 is a start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/story\/opinion\/letters\/2019\/11\/10\/bail-reform-important-for-all\/2326273007\/\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Real bail reform<\/a> is a common-sense step we can take right now to strengthen our economy, support our communities, and help get individuals back on their feet. It\u2019s time for Columbus to act.
