Kathy Hochul pushed back Saturday against political opponents who say she is not doing enough to confront an ongoing surge of violent crime as she pursues a full term in office this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got a lot done. I don\u2019t expect you to hear about that from my opponents because they don\u2019t like the fact that we were successful,\u201d Hochul told The Post in an exclusive interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a lot done already,\u201d she insisted when asked a second time whether she wanted to do more on the anti-crime front before state lawmakers leave Albany for the year on June 2.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A combination of lax judges and criminal justice reforms have allowed some high-profile criminal defendants to walk free in recent weeks while awaiting trial \u2014 despite changes made to bail reform in the state budget that passed in April. <\/p>\n<p>This includes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/24\/suspects-walk-free-after-arrests-by-nypds-new-anti-gun-teams\/\" rel=\"noopener\">four suspects released in March<\/a> hours after their firearm-related arrests. And now we have more factors for judges to consider. We have the ability [to jail] repeat offenders, even hate crimes being covered. Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island), who <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/politicsny.com\/2022\/05\/11\/hochul-in-on-tv-debates-as-suozzi-slams-her-on-crime\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called on her to push for additional changes<\/a> that would allow judges to jail criminal defendants, who are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty, pretrial based on their purported dangerousness to public safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis should be priority No. 1,\u201d Suozzi told reporters earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams has also criticized the changes as falling short of what he says is needed to battle an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/08\/adams-warns-more-to-be-done-on-bail-reform-after-budget-deal\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing increase in violent crimes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s comments on Saturday followed a commencement address at the University at Albany where she made her first public appearance since announcing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/08\/ny-gov-kathy-hochul-tests-positive-for-covid-19\/\" rel=\"noopener\">she had contracted COVID-19<\/a> last Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the gift of an education. Coughlin\/Office of the Governor<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mayor is scheduled to travel to Albany on Tuesday to presumably press Albany Democrats on legislative priorities, including extending mayoral control of city schools, state <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/12\/ny-democrats-wont-let-nyc-control-its-traffic-law-cameras\/\" rel=\"noopener\">authorization for speed cameras in the city<\/a> and making sure some type of tax break for affordable housing developers survives the legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul declined to definitely say whether an extension of the 421a tax break would happen as she gets ready to huddle with legislative leaders this week weeks after a proposed replacement dubbed 485 was blocked by Democratic legislators.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying yes or no. There\u2019s a lot of questions about it.
