{"id":31937,"date":"2022-05-20T16:10:29","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T16:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=31937"},"modified":"2022-05-20T16:10:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T16:10:29","slug":"three-new-academic-programs-added-for-2022-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/20\/three-new-academic-programs-added-for-2022-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Three New Academic Programs Added for 2022-23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div role=\"main\">\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May 20, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BLOOMINGTON \u2013 In an effort to continue preparing students for meaningful careers in<br \/>\n                     diverse fields, Illinois Wesleyan University will offer three new academic programs<br \/>\n                     in addition to more than 80 majors, minors and concentrations currently available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting in the fall of 2022, students can select to study any of the following new<br \/>\n                     academic programs:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/sociology\/criminology.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Criminology Minor<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focused on equity in the criminal justice system, this interdisciplinary minor will<br \/>\n                     appeal to students considering a wide variety of career paths, including law enforcement<br \/>\n                     or other criminal justice work, politics, non-profit work, political science and research.<br \/>\n                     The criminology minor classes will examine topics such as policing, eyewitness testimony,<br \/>\n                     jury behavior, crime scene analysis, and inequity in the criminal justice system.<br \/>\n                     Students will also gain first-hand experience by studying current legal cases in the<br \/>\n                     Bloomington area with opportunities to speak with those involved in criminal justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200b\u201dWhile criminology is a social science, many different disciplines have perspectives<br \/>\n                     and contributions to the study of crime and criminal justice \u2013 and our criminology<br \/>\n                     minor is uniquely interdisciplinary,\u201d said Todd Fuist, sociology professor. \u201cStudents<br \/>\n                     can, for example, take electives in business, philosophy, political science and English<br \/>\n                     that will count towards the minor. We think that this breadth will give students a<br \/>\n                     well-rounded point of view on the topic, taking advantage of our strong liberal arts<br \/>\n                     core here at IWU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/public-health\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Public Health Program<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rooted in the scientific exploration of public health, this program will provide the<br \/>\n                     knowledge and skills needed to contribute to local, state, national and global public<br \/>\n                     health initiatives in multiple settings. The interdisciplinary program involves courses<br \/>\n                     in health, chemistry, psychology, sociology, environmental studies and political science.<br \/>\n                     Students in the public health program have the opportunity to work directly with faculty<br \/>\n                     who also serve as field clinicians, public policy makers and agents of change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInterest in public health is elevated with the global COVID-19 pandemic, and its<br \/>\n                     ongoing relevance will sustain that interest,\u201d said Victoria Folse, director and professor<br \/>\n                     of nursing. \u201cSeveral courses explore factors that contribute to health disparities,<br \/>\n                     including the role of advocacy and justice in public health settings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/data-science\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Data Science Major<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the data science minor and data analysis certificate, this new major<br \/>\n                     prepares students for a variety of data-related careers by providing in-depth and<br \/>\n                     hands-on course work in programming, applied statistics, data management, data visualization,<br \/>\n                     ethics and machine learning. Students studying data science work with local non-profits,<br \/>\n                     government agencies and businesses of all sizes to develop data science projects that<br \/>\n                     benefit the organizations and provide students with real-world experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p xmlns:ouc=\"http:\/\/omniupdate.com\/XSL\/Variables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEventually everyone will need to be data literate, with the ability to look at data<br \/>\n                     and understand it.
