{"id":32157,"date":"2022-05-27T03:48:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T03:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=32157"},"modified":"2022-05-27T03:48:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T03:48:14","slug":"day-after-scathing-u-t-editorial-sheriff-candidate-hemmerling-leaves-city-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/27\/day-after-scathing-u-t-editorial-sheriff-candidate-hemmerling-leaves-city-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Day After Scathing U-T Editorial, Sheriff Candidate Hemmerling Leaves City Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<amp-youtube layout=\"responsive\" width=\"16\" height=\"9\" data-videoid=\"TpmZQjvCVUw\" title=\"Sheriff candidate John Hemmerling on trans women\" class=\"i-amphtml-layout-responsive i-amphtml-layout-size-defined\" i-amphtml-layout=\"responsive\"><i-amphtml-sizer slot=\"i-amphtml-svc\" style=\"display:block;padding-top:56.25%\"\/><a target=\"_blank\" placeholder=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TpmZQjvCVUw\" rel=\"noopener\"><amp-img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/TpmZQjvCVUw\/hqdefault.jpg?w=780&amp;ssl=1\" layout=\"fill\" object-fit=\"cover\" alt=\"Sheriff candidate John Hemmerling on trans women\" class=\"amp-wp-enforced-sizes i-amphtml-layout-fill i-amphtml-layout-size-defined\" data-hero-candidate=\"\" data-hero=\"\" i-amphtml-ssr=\"\" i-amphtml-layout=\"fill\"><img class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sheriff candidate John Hemmerling on trans women\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/TpmZQjvCVUw\/hqdefault.jpg?w=780&amp;ssl=1\" style=\"object-fit:cover\"\/><\/amp-img><\/a><\/amp-youtube>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A day after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.gov\/cityattorney\/divisions\/john-hemmerling\" rel=\"noopener\">John Hemmerling<\/a> lost a daily newspaper\u2019s endorsement for county sheriff,  he suddenly quit as a top prosecutor with the San Diego City Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI retired so I could focus full time on my race for sheriff,\u201d Hemmerling told Times of San Diego on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was disappointed with a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/opinion\/editorials\/story\/2022-05-25\/opinion-the-san-diego-union-tribune-editorial-board-no-longer-endorses-hemmerling-for-sheriff\" rel=\"noopener\">1,500-word editorial<\/a> Wednesday in The San Diego Union-Tribune rescinding its endorsement of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry if my comments were taken to imply criticism of anyone based on their sex or gender identity,\u201d Hemmerling said via email Thursday evening. \u201cMy sole intent was to express concern about the overbroad nature of the Board of Supervisors\u2019 recent ordinance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 56-year-old Republican\u2019s exit followed remarks he made April 30 at a candidate\u2019s forum in Ramona<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2022\/04\/30\/issa-absent-but-ramona-forum-edgy-with-gop-vs-gop-assembly-contest\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> taped by Times of San Diego.<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Dave Myers, a Democratic candidate for sheriff, tweeted a link to an audio, and tagged the Union-Tribune, in which Hemmerling refers to transgender women as \u201cthose men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its editorial Wednesday, the U-T opinion section said: \u201cTransgender women are women, not men. And transgender women are people, not political pawns to be mocked or used to score cheap points with conservative crowds \u2014 or thrown into jail cells where they will distrust the sheriff who has made such comments and fear what will happen to them in that sheriff\u2019s system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Editorial Board said it twice called for the removal of a county commissioner with anti-transgender views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also value due deliberation and wanted to hear more from Hemmerling before revisiting our endorsement,\u201d said the piece on the officially nonpartisan race.<\/p>\n<p>Online, the paper ran audio of a half-hour phone chat between Hemmerling and Editorial and Opinion Director Matthew T. Hall to give \u201chim a chance to explain himself and his comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>But the paper said Hemmerling, endorsed by the local GOP, offered no apology and didn\u2019t make a public statement of regret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used the word \u2018mistake\u2019 once and \u2018sorry\u2019 six times in saying it was a misstep by an unpolished first-time politician who was trying to shoehorn into a brief speech an issue that some in the crowd had asked him about beforehand,\u201d the editorial said.<\/p>\n<aside>\t\t\t\t\t<amp-analytics class=\"i-amphtml-layout-fixed i-amphtml-layout-size-defined\" style=\"width:1px;height:1px\" i-amphtml-layout=\"fixed\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<\/amp-analytics><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>It added: \u201cIt was more than a misstep by a novice politician who seemed to us to be the best candidate of three. When people first say what they believe, believe them. Transgender people are among the most vulnerable behind bars, and denying them their very humanity is a disqualifying trait for a sheriff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for the City Attorney\u2019s Office said: \u201cOur office does not comment on personnel matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hemmerling has been assistant city attorney of the criminal and community justice division. Before joining the City Attorney\u2019s Office, he served as a San Diego police officer for eight years. He retired in 2014 from the Marine Corps Reserve after 30 years of service in which he attained the rank of colonel.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Undersheriff Kelly Martinez didn\u2019t respond immediately to a request for comment. Neither did another sheriff candidate \u2014 Republican Jonathan Peck.<\/p>\n<p>But Myers, endorsed by the local Democratic Party, told Times of San Diego: \u201cSheriff\u2019s leadership has completely collapsed leading to historic record deaths in custody, another inmate died in custody yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this rate, in-custody jail deaths will exceed 50 at years end. In the last two years, our region experienced a double digit increase in hate crimes yet Undersheriff Kelly Martinez increased clerks to issue more concealed gun permits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny hateful or hurtful speech, especially anyone desiring public office must speak forcefully against hate and discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to Times of San Diego questions, Hemmerling said: \u201cHopefully this will be the catalyst for a broader discussion of this complex and divisive issue. I am confident that I will emerge in the top two in the June 7th primary.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-4    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Hemmerling expressed no hard feelings about Myers highlighting the Ramona remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI respect Dave Myers, and he has a right to his opinion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cAs the endorsed Republican, I am about law and order. I am committed to providing security and safety for all. No other candidate can match my breadth of experience, as a combat Marine, decorated San Diego police officer, and chief criminal prosecutor for the past six years.
