(Hustler Multimedia\/Anjali Chanda)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csdi\/vupoll-home.php#\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spring 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vanderbilt Poll surveyed 1,000 registered Tennessee voters from April 26 to May 14. The poll\u2019s results reveal disapproval of state and national politicians, bipartisan support for criminal justice reform and partisan divides on abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-directed by professor <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/joshclinton\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joshua Clinton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Vice Provost <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/political-science\/bio\/john-geer\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Geer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the poll has been conducted biannually by Vanderbilt\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions (<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csdi\/vupoll-home.php\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSDI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) since 2011. It relies on phone-based interviews randomly selected from a registered voter list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSDI attempts to avoid ideological and partisan bias by having its <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csdi\/vupoll-home.php#\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board of Advisors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form questions based on what they identify as the most pressing issues facing the state. According to the poll\u2019s <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csdi\/Fall_2021_methods.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methodology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, results are weighted by age, sex, education, race\/ethnicity and region of the state to match the demographics of Tennessee voters. This year\u2019s poll had a margin of error of \u00b1 3.8%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur focus in all our polls is to uncover what citizens think about important public policy issues and to make our findings available to citizens, policy-makers, and scholars,\u201d CSDI\u2019s website reads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Government and economy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support for President Joe Biden (D) has dropped among both Democrats and Republicans in the state in the last year; 79% of Democrats and 2% of Republicans approve of Biden, down from 92% and 5%, respectively, in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2021\/06\/08\/vanderbilt-poll-tennesseans-split-along-party-lines-on-vaccines-2020-election-and-cancel-culture\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spring 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Graphic courtesy of Vanderbilt University) (Vanderbilt University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was also a notable drop in the percentage of those who wish to see former President Donald Trump (R) run for reelection in 2024\u201438% of respondents expressed support for a potential Trump 2024 presidential run, down from 44% in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2021\/12\/16\/vanderbilt-poll-2021-approval-drops-for-tns-elected-leaders-and-second-trump-run-but-dems-and-republicans-find-unity-on-education-redistricting\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Comparatively, of respondents who are registered Republicans, 68% said they would support a Trump 2024 presidential run, compared to 79% in December 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the themes our latest poll shows is that, here in Tennessee, there is a declining appetite to have a replay of the 2020 presidential election in 2024,\u201d Geer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gov. Bill Lee (R) saw a slight dip in overall approval ratings from last year, though he remains popular among the general public with an approval rating of 56%. However, satisfaction with Lee\u2019s leadership shows partisan divides: 80% of Republicans would support his reelection, compared to 7% of Democrats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respondents ranked the most pressing issue concerning Tennesseans as the state of the national economy. Only 27% of those surveyed consider the economy to be in good shape\u201420 percentage points lower than last year. (Graphic courtesy of Vanderbilt University) (Vanderbilt University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Criminal justice reform\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results indicated bipartisan support for criminal justice reform, with 70% of respondents agreeing that criminal justice reform needs either \u201ca complete overhaul\u201d or \u201cmajor changes\u201d at the state and national levels, a topic that was <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/46919\/featured\/i-got-to-see-gods-hand-qa-with-cyntoia-brown-and-former-gov-bill-haslam\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a Vanderbilt event in March 2022 with former Gov. Bill Haslam (R). More specifically, 72% expressed support for investment in mental health care and addiction rehabilitation programs for convicts as potential avenues of reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A slight partisan split was evident regardings the death penalty. Given the choice of the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole, 52% of Republicans prefer giving convicted murderers the death penalty, while 22% of Democrats said the same. Overall support for the death penalty has declined to 37% in the Spring 2022 poll from 55% in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csdi\/JUNE_RESULTS.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">June 2011<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Lee put all executions on hold through December 2022 due to an \u201c<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbir.com\/article\/news\/local\/execution-oversight-tennessee-nashville-oscar-smith-lethal-injection-bill-lee\/51-a8289ef6-f401-4c94-af16-13adb7e438df\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oversight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in the lethal injection preparation procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48296\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48296\" src=\"https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-3-475x329.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-3-475x329.png 475w, https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-3-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-3.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chart showing preference for death penalty versus life in prison for convicts by Party ID. (Graphic courtesy of Vanderbilt University) (Vanderbilt University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Abortion<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion remains a divisive issue as Tennessee continues to pass legislative <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/45290\/featured\/knoxville-planned-parenthood-center-intentionally-burned-down-amid-rising-legislative-restrictions-on-abortion\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restrictions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on abortion and the nation reacts to the Supreme Court draft opinion, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/reproductive-freedom\/what-to-know-about-the-leaked-supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-and-whats-next\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on May 2, which would overturn <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/410\/113\/#tab-opinion-1950137\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1973)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With an almost even split of Tennesseans identifying as pro-choice versus pro-life, 70% of Democrats and 8% of Republicans thought abortion should be legal in all cases<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these divides, there is a bipartisan consensus for not completely banning abortion: 80% of respondents agree that abortion should be \u201cfully legal\u201d or \u201clegal\u201d in cases of rape and incest or when childbirth poses a health risk to the mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48297\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48297\" src=\"https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-4-475x338.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-4-475x338.png 475w, https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-4-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/vanderbilthustler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/unnamed-4.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chart showing views on abortion rights by Party ID. (Graphic courtesy of Vanderbilt University) (Vanderbilt University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Other findings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee Democrats and Republicans both blame social media for exacerbating political divides and view COVID-19 as less of a threat compared to the results of previous <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2021\/12\/16\/vanderbilt-poll-2021-approval-drops-for-tns-elected-leaders-and-second-trump-run-but-dems-and-republicans-find-unity-on-education-redistricting\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+ rights continue to produce ideological divides in the state. Two-thirds of respondents favor providing \u201cadequate\u201d health care access to transgender individuals, though most respondents simultaneously expressed opposition to transgender students participating on athletic teams that align with their gender identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education also poses a partisan split in Tennessee.
