Swanson Prize for Teaching Excellence); and Stephanie Troutman Robbins (Graduate and Professional Education Teaching and Mentoring Award).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Distinguished Scholar Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>The Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes outstanding mid-career faculty members for innovations in their disciplines and contributions to teaching, research and outreach at the University. The award includes a $10,000 prize.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Daniel Martinez<br \/>Associate Professor, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sociology.arizona.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Sociology<\/a><br \/>Co-director, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bmi.arizona.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Binational Migration Institute<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"file-2830\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg view-mode-uaqs_small pull-right\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/sbs.arizona.edu\/sites\/sbs.arizona.edu\/files\/styles\/uaqs_small\/public\/Daniel-Martinez.jpg?itok=iB6b0Z49\" alt=\"Daniel Martinez\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-muted\">\n  Daniel Martinez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Daniel Mart\u00ednez\u2019s research and teaching interests include race and ethnicity, undocumented\u00a0immigration, and criminology. He edited\u00a0<em>In the Shadow of the Wall: Violence and Migration on the U.S. Mexico Border<\/em> (University of Arizona Press, 2018) and was co-author of the Binational Migration Institute report \u201cMigrant Deaths in Southern Arizona: Recovered Undocumented Border Crosser Remains Investigated by the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, 1990-2020.\u201d One nominator noted that Martinez\u2019s research has been published in top journals across multiple fields, garnered over 1600 citations and multiple awards, and prompted four invitations to federal agencies and Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Nominator comments included, \u201cAs an instructor, he is creative and innovative, and his student course evaluations are uniformly excellent;\u201d \u201cMart\u00ednez\u2019s work has also been instrumental in helping the public and policymakers better understand the social and cultural impact of different immigration enforcement practices;\u201d and \u201cDr. Mart\u00ednez reputation as a rising academic star is clear. His work has profoundly impacted not only his academic field of sociology but also shines in its translational impact \u2013 particularly in the areas of social, health, and cultural impact along Arizona\u2019s borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gerald J. Swanson Prize for Teaching Excellence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>This award recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching. It was created through a gift from the Thomas R. Brown Foundation in honor of Gerald J. Swanson, professor emeritus of economics. The award includes a $5,000 prize.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Suzanne Dovi<br \/>Associate Professor, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sgpp.arizona.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Government and Public Policy<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"file-2831\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg view-mode-uaqs_small pull-left\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/sbs.arizona.edu\/sites\/sbs.arizona.edu\/files\/styles\/uaqs_small\/public\/Suzanne%20Dovi.jpg?itok=9uZIG3ON\" alt=\"Suzanne Dovi\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-muted\">\n  Suzanne Dovi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Suzanne Dovi&#8217;s research interests include democratic theory, representation of historically disadvantaged groups,\u00a0feminist theory, and human rights. She explores how democratic\u00a0citizens should evaluate those who hold and exercise power over vulnerable and marginalized groups.\u00a0Her book <em>The Good Representative<\/em> was published by Blackwell in 2008, and she is currently working on another book project that deals with disappointment about democratic representative institutions, titled <em>What&#8217;s Missing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One nominator stressed Dovi\u2019s passionate engagement and creative practices inspire a love of learning in her students. \u201cShe is not only an excellent but an exciting teacher. She is constantly tinkering with old and exploring new pedagogies to enhance classroom learning, produce engaging and effective assignments and ensure that course materials &#8216;come alive&#8217; for her students,\u201d a nominator wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Dovi has been the most formative professor in regard to my undergraduate career,\u201d one student wrote. Another wrote, \u201cDr. Dovi has had an immense impact on me, not only in my ideas from her classes but in my academic career as a whole. She has inspired me to delve deeper into my academic passions outside of the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Graduate and Professional Education Teaching and Mentoring Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>These awards honor faculty members who excel in their teaching and mentoring of graduate students. The award includes a $2,500 prize.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Stephanie Troutman Robbins<\/strong><br \/><strong>Head, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gws.arizona.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Gender and Women&#8217;s Studies<\/a><br \/>Associate Professor, Department of Gender and Women&#8217;s Studies and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.arizona.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of English<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"file-2832\" class=\"file file-image file-image-png view-mode-uaqs_small pull-right\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/sbs.arizona.edu\/sites\/sbs.arizona.edu\/files\/styles\/uaqs_small\/public\/troutman.png?itok=ULjooOFG\" alt=\"Stephanie Troutman Robbins\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-muted\">\n  Stephanie Troutman Robbins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Troutman Robbins\u2019s research interests include literacies focused on social justice, feminist pedagogy, critical race theory, film studies, Black feminist theory, schooling, identity\/ies and education. She is co-author of <em>Narratives of Family Assets, Community Gifts, &amp; Cultural Endowments:\u00a0Re-Imagining the Invisible Knapsack<\/em>\u00a0(Lexington Press, 2018) and co-editor of <em>Race in American Television: Voices and Visions that Shaped a Nation<\/em> (ABC-CLIO\/Greenwood Press, 2021). Troutman Robbins is also the former director of two outreach projects between the University of Arizona and Tucson schools: Wildcat Writers (2015- 2020) and the Southern Arizona Writing Project (2015-2020.)<\/p>\n<p>A former high school and middle grades public school teacher, Troutman Robbinsis a scholar-activist who has been recognized across a variety of community and campus spaces for her mentorship, student advocacy, and social justice leadership.\u00a0Her passion is working with marginalized graduate and undergraduate students.
