This process emphasizes transparency, merit, and the diversity of the Canadian population, and will continue to ensure the appointment of jurists who meet the highest standards of excellence and integrity.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Honourable Daniel Boone<\/b>, a Judge of the Supreme Court of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">St. John&#8217;s<\/span>, is appointed a Judge of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span>. <span class=\"xn-person\">Justice Boone<\/span> replaces Justice <span class=\"xn-person\">G.D. Butler<\/span>, who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective <span class=\"xn-chron\">March 2, 2022<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Quote<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish <span class=\"xn-person\">Justice Boone<\/span> every success as he takes on his new role. I am confident he will serve the people of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span> well as a member of the Court of Appeal of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2013The Hon. <span class=\"xn-person\">David Lametti<\/span>, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Biography<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Justice <span class=\"xn-person\">Daniel Boone<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was appointed to the Supreme Court of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span> in 2018. He graduated from <span class=\"xn-org\">Memorial University<\/span> with a B.A. in 1984, and from the <span class=\"xn-org\">University of Ottawa<\/span> with an LL.B. in 1988. He articled with <span class=\"xn-person\">Stirling Ryan<\/span> and was called to the Bar of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span> in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Before his appointment to the Supreme Court of <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Justice Boone<\/span> practiced with <span class=\"xn-person\">Stirling Ryan<\/span> and the successor merged firm of <span class=\"xn-person\">Stewart McKelvey<\/span>. His practice focused on civil litigation. He had extensive trial and appellate experience in medical malpractice, insurance law, construction law and class actions. He was appointed Queen&#8217;s Counsel in 2014 and inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2015. During his legal career, <span class=\"xn-person\">Justice Boone<\/span> dedicated considerable time to the professional development of younger lawyers through teaching at the Bar Admission Course, making presentations to professional organizations, and mentoring.<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"link caas-button collapse-button\" aria-label=\"\" title=\"\" data-ylk=\"elm:readmore;slk:Story continues\">Story continues<\/button><\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining the bench, <span class=\"xn-person\">Justice Boone<\/span> was involved in the areas of access to justice, as Chair of the Law Foundation, and the arts, as a director of both the <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and Labrador Film Development Corporation and the Perchance Theatre Company.<\/p>\n<p><b>Quick facts<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"caas-list caas-list-bullet\">\n<li>\n<p>At the Superior Court level, more than 540 judges have been appointed since <span class=\"xn-chron\">November 2015<\/span>. These exceptional jurists represent the diversity that strengthens <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>. Of these judges, more than half are women, and appointments reflect an increased representation of visible minorities, Indigenous, LGBTQ2+, and those who self-identify as having a disability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The Government of <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> is committed to promoting access to justice for all Canadians. To improve outcomes for Canadian families, Budget 2018 provides funding of <span class=\"xn-money\">$77.2 million<\/span> over four years to support the expansion of unified family courts, beginning in\u00a02019-2020.\u00a0This investment in the family justice system will create 39 new judicial positions in <span class=\"xn-location\">Alberta<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Nova Scotia<\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-location\">Newfoundland<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Labrador<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Federal judicial appointments are made by the Governor General, acting on the advice of the federal Cabinet and recommendations from the Minister of Justice.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The Judicial Advisory Committees across <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> play a key role in evaluating judicial applications. Changes to the\u00a0<i>Judges Act<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Criminal Code<\/i>\u00a0that came into force on <span class=\"xn-chron\">May 6, 2021<\/span>, mean that in order to be eligible for appointment to a provincial superior court, candidates must agree to participate in continuing education on matters related to sexual assault law and social context, which includes systemic racism and systemic discrimination.
