\nreleased new data indicating that New Zealand is falling
\nseriously short when it comes to meeting human rights
\ncommitments across a number of areas.<\/p>\n
\nInternational Aotearoa New Zealand is deeply concerned by
\nthis most recent data.<\/p>\n
\nconcerning trend in relation to freedom from torture and
\nill-treatment, where, since 2017 New Zealand\u2019s score
\nappears to have been largely worsening (in 2017 the score
\nwas 7.3 out of 10 and decreased to 6.5 in the latest
\ndata).<\/p>\n
\nmentioned the following:<\/p>\n
\nexperience ethnic profiling by police, and discriminatory
\nlegal systems<\/p>\n
\ncare<\/p>\n
\nwhen it comes to protecting female victims<\/p>\n
\nInsufficient Covid-19 measures in prisons put prisoners at
\nrisk due to poor ventilation, double-bunking, and lack of
\nmasks<\/p>\n
\nto restraint at school, in state care, and in mental health
\nfacilities<\/p>\n
\nM\u0101ori people, especially M\u0101ori women, are at unique risk
\nfor violence by Corrections Officers in New Zealand
\nprisons<\/p>\n
\nof serious human rights concerns in the criminal justice
\nsystem. In just two recent examples, the Chief Ombudsman
\ndescribed an incident at Auckland Prison as amounting to
\ncruel treatment, and a District Court Judge found practices
\namounting to “degrading and fundamentally inhumane”
\ntreatment, as well as excessive use of force. Amnesty
\nInternational and others have documented many other serious
\nhuman rights concerns.<\/p>\n
\nfundamental, system-level change.<\/p>\n
\nthrough our criminal justice system are complex and
\nprofound, but there are pathways forward. Among them are
\nthose set out by In\u0101ia Tonu Nei and the extensive work done
\nby other researchers and advocates over many years,
\nincluding the hugely influential paper \u2018He Whajpaanga
\nHou\u2019 by Moana Jackson.<\/p>\n
