{"id":33327,"date":"2022-07-01T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/01\/shortage-of-beds-in-texas-mental-hospitals-delays-treatment\/"},"modified":"2022-07-01T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T01:00:00","slug":"shortage-of-beds-in-texas-mental-hospitals-delays-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/01\/shortage-of-beds-in-texas-mental-hospitals-delays-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortage of beds in Texas mental hospitals delays treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of prisoners in the Dallas County jail are waiting more than two years for a bed in a state mental hospital.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>DALLAS \u2014 <span lang=\"EN-US\">Inside the Dallas County Jail, there are more than 360 prisoners found incompetent to stand trial who are awaiting a bed in a state mental hospital.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">On average, a male prisoner found incompetent to stand trial waits about 795 days to get a bed in a\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/state\/texas-news\/state-mental-hospitals-lack-of-maximum-security-beds-creates-long-waits\/287-238475382\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">maximum-security state hospital<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">. The wait time for a female prisoner in the same situation is about 230 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe wait is just incredibly long,\u201d said defense attorney Stara Roemer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">A judge ruled one of her clients incompetent in February 2021. The judge ordered that he be sent to a state mental hospital for treatment. He is still waiting in jail more than 460 days later.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThere&#8217;s<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0no end in sight,\u201d Roemer said. \u201cAnd that&#8217;s another one of the problems&#8230; you have literally no idea when their number\u2019s gonna finally be called.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">WFAA first detailed the lengthy wait times for\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/state\/texas-news\/state-mental-hospitals-lack-of-maximum-security-beds-creates-long-waits\/287-238475382\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">state hospital beds in 2016<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">, highlighting the case of Thomas Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Johnson,\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/former-am-football-player-gets-life-in-prison-for-killing-white-rock-runner-with-machete\/287-bbcebb69-f3b3-4d7f-85f1-c85df8382902\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">a former Texas A&amp;M football player<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">, ambushed and hacked to death a White Rock Lake jogger in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">A judge had found the diagnosed schizophrenic incompetent to stand trial and ordered him to be sent to a mental hospital, but there was no available bed for months.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhen there&#8217;s not enough beds, that&#8217;s a crisis that I think we all need to be\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">concerned about,\u201d his then-attorney, Jennifer Balido, said in a 2016 interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Johnson eventually got a bed in a state mental hospital and eventually stood trial for murder. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">For years, wait times have been lengthy, but state officials say those wait times have been exacerbated by the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 2020, the wait time for a maximum-security bed in Texas was 270 days. It\u2019s now 514 days, state officials said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The wait time in 2020 for a minimum-security bed was about 3-and-a-half months. It\u2019s now 230 days, or 7-and-a-half months, according to state officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Currently, there are more than 2,300 people waiting for a state hospital bed in county jails across Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">While those prisoners await a bed, it\u2019s left to county taxpayers to pay the bills while they languish in jail.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThat\u2019s unacceptable,\u201d said Dallas County Commissioner Theresa Daniel. \u201cI don\u2019t care how you cut it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Daniel told WFAA it costs about $67 on average a day for the county to house a prisoner. But if a prisoner needs health care or mental health services, the cost jumps to about $120 a day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u201cDo the math,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s very expensive.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the Bexar County jail, there are more than 220 prisoners waiting on a state mental hospital bed. That\u2019s almost double the number from a year ago, said Mike Lozito, director of the county\u2019s Office of Criminal Justice Policy, Planning &amp; Programs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lozito said the state is failing in its responsibility to \u201crestore individuals back to competency so they can stand trial.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe person is waiting\u201d for treatment, Lozito said. \u201cSometimes they\u2019re waiting longer than what their sentence would be&#8230;Because of their mental health issues, they&#8217;re not getting their fair day in court.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He says it\u2019s the state that has the responsibility to fix the problem.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">State officials say they have been working to increase the number of beds.
