This corpus enables critical law scholars and linguists to collaborate on studies of c.170 years of international war law, informed by both legal and linguistic theories and methods.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>Every text makes its mark on the world. Some marks are like a small ripple on a pond, while others, like the texts of international war law, are like powerful waves, as they set the legal framework for the use of lethal violence by nation states. These texts construct a semiotic universe in which, among other extreme forms of human behaviour, the killing of children can either be given legal imprimatur, or can be labelled a \u2018war crime\u2019.<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>To enable better interdisciplinary collaboration on these key texts, we have created the Macquarie Laws of War Corpus (MQLWC), based on the texts included by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in their\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"International Humanitarian Law Database\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/4pbvvo\" rel=\"noopener\">International Humanitarian Law Database<\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span>The MQLWC is hosted by the\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"Sydney Corpus Lab\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/kicvvo\" rel=\"noopener\">Sydney Corpus Lab<\/a><span>. It begins with the 1856 Paris Declaration Respecting Maritime Law, the\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"first open-ended multilateral treaty\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/0advvo\" rel=\"noopener\">first open-ended multilateral treaty<\/a><span>\u00a0to which any state could become a party. The most recent document is the latest amendment to the Rome Statute (2019), the legal instrument which established the\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"International Criminal Court,\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/g3dvvo\" rel=\"noopener\">International Criminal Court,<\/a><span>\u00a0the body with responsibility for trying individuals charged with war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression, and genocide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"concordance\" class=\"p--large\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/ethics\/international-justice\/international-justice-in-the-news\/2022\/images\/07-july\/concordance.png\" width=\"1168\"\/><\/span><span>Figure 1: a sample of concordance lines for &#8220;civilian&#8221; in the MQLWC<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The corpus includes a total of 110 texts, nearly 392K words, and can be searched using basic corpus linguistic techniques such as word frequencies (see Table 1 for top 20 lexical items in the MQLWC), text dispersion, concordances and collocations. The corpus can also be searched by the categories to which these documents are assigned by the ICRC, such as \u2018victims of armed conflicts\u2019, \u2018methods and means of warfare\u2019, \u2018criminal repression\u2019, etc. The data set can also be downloaded to use in other programs, such as\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"#Lancsbox\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/wvevvo\" rel=\"noopener\">#Lancsbox<\/a><span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"Voyant Tools\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/cofvvo\" rel=\"noopener\">Voyant Tools<\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"table\" class=\"p--large\" height=\"832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/ethics\/international-justice\/international-justice-in-the-news\/2022\/images\/07-july\/table_iii.png\" width=\"1024\"\/>Table 1:\u00a0Twenty most frequent lexical (content) items in the MQLWC<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Because the data is tagged by year of adoption, diachronic questions (i.e., how do patterns change over the time period of almost 170 years of the data?) can be asked. Figure 2, using Voyant Tools, compares the words \u2018military*\u2019 and \u2018civilian*\u2019 (with the asterisk denoting that the search includes all related word forms, e.g., \u2018civilian\/s\u2019), and shows the relative dominance of \u2018military\u2019 over \u2018civilian\u2019 in international war law, and that \u2018civilian\u2019 grows as a preoccupation of international war law over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"figure of terms\" class=\"p--large\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/ethics\/international-justice\/international-justice-in-the-news\/2022\/images\/07-july\/figure-2.png\" width=\"1168\"\/>Figure 2: Comparing \u2018military*\u2019 and \u2018civilian*\u2019 across the timeline of international war law<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Collocational searches allow us to see the typical words that accompany key words in these texts. Collocates are crucial to understanding the meaning of a word, and the way it is being used in a particular register. With a program like #Lancsbox, we can visualise the collocates of a word, and investigate whether it has proximity to another key word. Figure 3 compares two words, \u2018violence\u2019 (on the left) with \u2018war\u2019 (on the right). The diagram shows how distinct these two words are in this corpus, with \u2018war being a clearly dominant concept, and \u2018violence\u2019 being kept at a distance from \u2018war\u2019 \u2013 a finding that echoes\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" data-name=\"studies of other data\" data-type=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4hd3oe\/g7wc9wd\/sggvvo\" rel=\"noopener\">studies of other data<\/a><span>.
