{"id":33976,"date":"2022-07-20T11:00:30","date_gmt":"2022-07-20T11:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/20\/over-half-of-state-prisoners-serve-sentences-of-10-years\/"},"modified":"2022-07-20T11:00:30","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T11:00:30","slug":"over-half-of-state-prisoners-serve-sentences-of-10-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/20\/over-half-of-state-prisoners-serve-sentences-of-10-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Over Half of State Prisoners Serve Sentences of 10+ Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2236152\" class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 236px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazy lazy-hidden size-full wp-image-2236152\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/thecrimereport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Picture4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"247\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2236152\" src=\"https:\/\/thecrimereport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Picture4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"247\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">I<strong>llustration courtesy CCJ<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some 57 percent of people held in state prison in 2019 were serving sentences of 10 years or longer\u2014an 11 percent jump from the previous decade, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/counciloncj.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Council on Criminal Justice<\/a>\u00a0(CCJ)\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/counciloncj.org\/long-sentences\/\" rel=\"noopener\">task force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/counciloncj.foleon.com\/tfls\/long-sentences-by-the-numbers\" rel=\"noopener\">a study<\/a> examining the nation\u2019s use of long prison sentences, researchers found, however, that while the size of the population serving long sentences continues to grow in state prisons, recent state prison admissions of individuals sentenced to terms longer than 10 years remained relatively low.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals serving long sentences amounted to only 17 percent of new state prison admissions.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the cumulative number of long-term prisoners was a product of what researchers called a \u201cstacking effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study gives a \u201cground level understanding of what the numbers look like,\u201d said John Maki, the Director of the Long Sentences Task Force, in a webinar timed to coincide with the study\u2019s release Wednesday. \u201cBut it really points to how much we don\u2019t know about long sentences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study found the length of time served by people sentenced to 10 years or more has grown.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2005 and 2019, the average amount of time served by the group increased from 9.7 years to 15.5 years.<\/p>\n<p>The CCJ task force plans to continue studying the implications of long sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the data, 57 percent of individuals serving sentences over 10 years committed a violent offense.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, 43 percent were imprisoned for non-violent offenses such as drug crimes, firearms violations and other offenses.<\/p>\n<p>Another effect of long sentencing the study found was people 55 and over became the fastest-growing population serving long sentences, jumping from more than 8 percent in 2005 to 19 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The study also uncovered that the disparities of long sentences between Blacks and whites had increased by 3 percent since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>When accounting for conviction offenses, African Americans received longer sentences for violent crimes compared to whites, and white people saw longer sentences for some property crimes, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>The report is the first in a series of publications from the Task Force on Long Sentences, which intends to release recommendations for changes in policy and practice in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a;
