Depending on the crime, some are tried as adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>We spoke with Shelby County advocates working to ensure fair and safe laws for juveniles who commit crimes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>According to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.njjn.org\/about-us\/\" rel=\"noopener\">National Juvenile Justice Network<\/a>, more than 200,000 youth are tried, sentenced, or incarcerated as adults each year in the United States. We sat down with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shelbycountytn.gov\/2615\/Juvenile-Justice-Consortium\" rel=\"noopener\">Countywide Juvenile Justice Consortium<\/a> (CJJC). They are a community outreach program tracking the progress of juvenile court in Memphis and Shelby County.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><strong class=\"cms__embed-related-story\">RELATED: <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"cms__embed-related-story__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.localmemphis.com\/article\/news\/crime\/memphis-whitehaven-lane-tennessee-shooting-woman-dead\/522-15a39b23-88af-4ea1-ba30-6705ab833463\" rel=\"noopener\">15-year-old charged with first-degree murder in death of Memphis church leader<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>When it comes to cases where juveniles are tried as adults, it is sometime a question punishment versus rehabilitation. \u201cThis is especially specific to our city because we try to transfer more young people as adults than the rest of Tennessee combined,\u201d said Zahra Chowdhury, CJJC Youth Representative. \u201cWhy is just one county in our state taking up 55% of juvenile justice transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Although Shelby County has more youth tried as adults, the county\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shelbycountytn.gov\/DocumentCenter\/View\/39957\/Annual-Report-2021\" rel=\"noopener\">annual report<\/a> shows a decrease in transferred cases. From 2017 to 2019, the numbers have fluctuated from 92 to 78 to 90. It dropped to 49 youth in 2020 and 40 in 2021. \u201cWe should be doing more for our young people. We shouldn\u2019t be trying to pipeline them or putting them into more contact with a system that might not be right for them,\u201d said Chowdhury.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Van Turner, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naacpmemphis.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Memphis Branch NAACP President<\/a>, said the goal should be rehabilitation. \u201cIf you put them further in the system and try those juveniles as adults, it\u2019s probably no way they can return back,\u201d said Turner. \u201cIt does not improve the community or assist the community in resolving the issue of crime when we are taking juveniles who could be rehabilitated and putting them in a system where we know there\u2019s less likely chance of them being rehabilitated. That\u2019s in the adult system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><strong class=\"cms__embed-related-story\">RELATED: <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"cms__embed-related-story__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.localmemphis.com\/article\/news\/crime\/memphis-youth-intervention-mentors-teenagers-charged-violent-crimes\/522-8ffe1ba4-7f4d-4686-8b04-44b24eebd78b\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Red light is flashing&#8217;: Memphis youth intervention mentors taking on surge of teenagers charged with violent crimes<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Research shows more people of color, particularly Black youth, are tried as adults than other groups. \u201cI think 93 or 95% of young people who are tried as adults are Black youth. That\u2019s really really significant because 96% of the young people in Memphis are not Black, but 96% of people that we are trying as adults are Black,\u201d said Chowdhury.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cWe want equity. We want equality, and we want treatment,\u201d said Turner. He and Chowdhury would like to see more alternative solution to trying juveniles as adults.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cAre we providing our young people with enough mental and emotional resources,\u201d asked Chowdhury.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think any young people wake up saying they want to commit a heinous crime\u2026What has gotten that person there? That\u2019s what we need to address,\u201d said Turner.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>We reached out to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shelbycountytn.gov\/226\/Juvenile-Court\" rel=\"noopener\">Shelby County Juvenile Court<\/a> to see how many juveniles have been tried as adults this year, so far.
