It begins with highlighting the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/naacp.org\/find-resources\/history-explained\/origins-modern-day-policing\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">origin of policing as slave patrols<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how that system has persisted and evolved over time to terrorize and brutalize Black Americans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film features the voices and expertise of scholars and community activists, including <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wayfinder.foundation\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wayfinder Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team members, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nekima_Levy_Armstrong\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nekima Levy Armstrong, Esq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=saz_FBJgyEU\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myon Burrell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was targeted by Minneapolis police, wrongfully accused and incarcerated for a murder he didn\u2019t commit.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here supporting one of our Women of Promise, Emani, at the premiere of her film &#8220;Thugs: A Documentary on The Criminalization of Black Youth&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Emani &amp; her co-director Taylor are only 18 y\/o &amp; have already dived into their passion to tell our stories on screen. Show some \u2764\ufe0f\u270a\ud83c\udffe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uajpsee85o\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/uajpsee85o<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PeeplesVoice (@PeeplesVoiceChi) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeeplesVoiceChi\/status\/1548100129898434563?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">July 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emani and Taylor\u2019s documentary joins a collection of existing calls to action challenging the world to explore and eradicate policies and practices criminalizing Black youth and stifling their genius before it\u2019s even realized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Documentary made by high schoolers highlights school to prison pipeline<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/issues\/juvenile-justice\/school-prison-pipeline\/school-prison-pipeline-infographic#:~:text=Black%20students%20represent%2031%25%20of,justice%20system%20the%20following%20year.\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACLU says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the \u201cschool-to-prison pipeline\u201d is a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect, and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished and pushed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.calfund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ed-Trust-West-Black-Minds-Matter-FINAL-PDF.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to an Education Trust report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Black kids are less likely to attend preschool, have limited access to quality schools and high rigor courses, are disproportionately and unfairly disciplined, and have higher dropout rates than White and Asian students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black kids represent 15 percent of the public school student body but account for <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/racial-disparities-in-school-discipline-are-growing-federal-data-shows\/2018\/04\/24\/67b5d2b8-47e4-11e8-827e-190efaf1f1ee_story.html?utm_term=.fae0b09e66a3\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of arrests. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2017\/11\/07\/250-preschoolers-suspended-or-expelled-every-school-day-new-analysis\/?utm_term=.1b2cf6a1d875\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black preschoolers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are 2.2 times more likely to be suspended than their White peers. Black youth and teens are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times more likely<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theblackwallsttimes.com\/2018\/09\/21\/school-to-prison-pipeline-tulsa-improving-but-disparities-remain\/\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended<\/a> than White students. And they\u2019re twice as likely to be expelled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/educationpost.org\/if-youre-justifying-higher-suspension-rates-for-black-kids-then-youre-not-facing-up-to-racism-in-america\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racially biased policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, educators and administrators who refuse to acknowledge their <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/educationpost.org\/everyone-keeps-talking-about-implicit-racial-bias-but-what-is-it\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implicit bias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are contributing to higher suspension rates. Suspensions and expulsions lead to more and more dropouts. And at least <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/education_futures\/2016\/08\/black_boys_in_crisis_the_school-to-prison_pipeline.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those dropouts will end up in prison at some point in their lives\u2014what we know as the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theedadvocate.org\/tag\/black-boys-in-crisis-series\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school-to-prison pipeline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><i>Thugs: A Documentary on The Criminalization of Black Youth<\/i><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, research conducted by the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innocence Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals a pervasive trend of racist tactics employed by the criminal justice system. Their data shows <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/facts-racial-discrimination-justice-system-wrongful-conviction-black-history-month\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly half the people currently on death row around the country are Black,<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with innocent Black people seven times more likely to be convicted of murder than an innocent white person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/facts-racial-discrimination-justice-system-wrongful-conviction-black-history-month\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than half of them have been exonerated since 1973<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Black people will spend at least 13.8 years on death row before they\u2019re freed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the Innocence Project also reports that police misconduct is a factor in more than half of all wrongful murder convictions involving Black people. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/lack-of-police-accountability-contributes-to-wrongful-conviction\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaps in accountability systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offer more protection for guilty police officers than innocent civilians. As a result, there\u2019s a strong correlation between the school-to-prison pipeline and the mass incarceration system, which is now being called <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/news\/the-chains-of-slavery-still-exist-in-mass-incarceration\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern day slavery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsmknighterrant.org\/2022\/03\/18\/senior-emani-labon-creates-her-own-documentary-highlighting-marginalization-of-black-youth\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emani said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to spread the message of just how mass incarceration affects the black community and how we as a community, as a society need to stop perceiving young black people as criminals, as thugs, taking the innocence away from black children. It\u2019s something that happens and it\u2019s something that leads to, you know, police brutality, and it\u2019s just the stem of racism in general,\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emani\u2019s message was delivered and received the evening she was able to premiere the film in her hometown, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
