Kathy Hochul claimed Tuesday that she supports law enforcement \u201d 100%\u201d \u2014 despite cozying up to vocal supporters of the \u201cDefund the Police\u201d movement as part of her election bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe era of denigrating our police is over. We support you 100 percent,\u201d Hochul said at the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference in upstate Glens Falls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one will ever say the words \u2018Defund The Police\u2019 in my presence. That is not going to go anywhere. You\u2019re not going to make friends with me if you say that,\u201d added Hochul, who expressed support for increasing state spending on police moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Her comments appear at odds with her running on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/07\/working-families-party-backs-kathy-hochul-for-ny-governor\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Working Families Party ballot line, <\/a>in addition to as a Democrat, this November. Working Families has backed the \u201cDefund\u201d movement in the past. Hochul is up against Republican gubernatorial nominee Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Suffolk) in the Nov. 8 election.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s defund ties also include the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/28\/hochul-breaks-with-new-lt-gov-over-calls-to-defund-the-police\/\" rel=\"noopener\">appointment of Brian Benjamin<\/a> as her lieutenant governor last year alongside Amit Bagga as<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/29\/amit-bagga-new-hochul-appointee-wants-to-defund-the-police\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> deputy secretary for intergovernmental affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Benjamin and Bagga vowed to support defund efforts while running for city offices in 2021. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 1st big decision as Governor that Working Families Party backed Kathy Hochul made was to pick a Lt Governor. Santiago\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hochul rejected a call Tuesday by New York City Mayor Eric Adams to convene state lawmakers for an extraordinary session of the legislature to address spiraling crime, hours after urging police chiefs to be patient with changes approved in the state budget that passed in April. The changes included <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/07\/hochul-announces-plan-to-change-nys-criminal-justice-reform-laws\/\" rel=\"noopener\">making more crimes bail-eligible.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur budget just passed, and some of these laws just went into effect to give the law enforcement more opportunities to arrest repeat offenders,\u201d Hochul told police chiefs Tuesday. \u201cAnd property thefts and gun-violence cases and hate crimes \u2013 all of those are now covered back under the law. They had not been covered before.
