{"id":34217,"date":"2022-07-28T09:21:48","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T09:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/?p=34217"},"modified":"2022-07-28T09:21:48","modified_gmt":"2022-07-28T09:21:48","slug":"panel-at-northeastern-discusses-the-growing-epidemic-of-gun-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjstudents.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/28\/panel-at-northeastern-discusses-the-growing-epidemic-of-gun-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel at Northeastern discusses the growing epidemic of gun violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As of late afternoon Monday, as panelists at a Northeastern event discussed the ever-growing epidemic of gun violence, there had been 247 mass shootings in the U.S. already this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is part of a gruesome trend: From 417 mass shootings in 2019, to 610 the following year, to 692 a year ago. Though they generate extensive reporting by the news media, each event contributes to a dynamic of uncertainty and hopelessness, noted <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/faculty\/theodore-c-landsmark\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ted Landsmark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a panelist of \u201cBuffalo Honest, Dallas Honest, Uvalde Honest: Hate, White Supremacy, Guns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image-layout article__image-layout--2x2\"><figcaption class=\"article__image-layout__caption\">In response to what happened in Buffalo, Dallas, Laguna Woods, and now Uvalde, Northeastern panelists discuss the rise in shootings motivated by hate in the Cabral Center at the John D. Photos by Alyssa Stone\/Northeastern University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI feel as though we\u2019re just at the beginning of trying to figure out why it was that someone in rural South Carolina would drive several hours and then sit in a church basement with a group of people he didn\u2019t know\u2014who were willing to have him join in a prayer meeting\u2014and then shoot and kill them,\u201d said Landsmark, distinguished professor of public policy and urban affairs, and director of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/dukakiscenter\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kitty and Michael Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThat\u2019s a kind of sickness that I don\u2019t know that we understand yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was referring to the 2015 massacre of nine people by 21-year-old <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/death-sentence-upheld-man-who-killed-9-south-carolina-church-n1277667\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dylann Roof<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an admitted white supremacist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The in-person and streamed event, held at the Cabral Center at the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastern.edu\/aai\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John D. O\u2019Bryant African American Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was part of Northeastern\u2019s Civility Series, focused on civic sustainability. It was driven by a need to understand and respond to the mass shootings that included the May 24 killings of <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/05\/us\/uvalde-shooting-victims.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">19 students and two teachers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Landsmark urged academics to collaborate on collecting and analyzing information drawn from these events in order to make sense of their currently unfathomable pattern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image-layout article__image-layout--2x2\"><figcaption class=\"article__image-layout__caption\">Jack McDevitt, right, opens the panel discussion about the rise in hate related gun violence. Photos by Alyssa Stone\/Northeastern University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe triggers of those assault weapons are being pulled by a range of people who we don\u2019t understand fully,\u201d Landsmark said. \u201cTwo years ago, I was able to say, \u2018This is an issue of young white men who are disenfranchised and feel distant.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But Landsmark noted that the circumstances have grown more complex and volatile involving killers across the demographic spectrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On May 14 in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/05\/14\/nyregion\/buffalo-shooting\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Buffalo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 10 people were killed and three were wounded by a white teenager who appeared to be driven by replacement theory, which suggests that nonwhite people are brought to the U.S. to replace white voters on behalf of a political agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But three days earlier, in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/05\/17\/1099453183\/dallas-koreatown-hair-salon-shooting-arrest-hate-crime\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dallas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, three women of Asian descent were shot in a hair salon in the Koreatown neighborhood in what has been referred to as a hate crime by Dallas police. The alleged assailant was a Black man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And on May 15 in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/laguna-woods-church-shooting-david-chou-taiwan-history-hate-rcna29935\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laguna Woods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, California, the alleged assailant, a 68-year-old immigrant from Taiwan, killed one person and injured five more at a Sunday church service attended by people of Asian descent. The shooter was alleged to be driven by political hatred of Taiwan and its people. He had chained and locked the doors and had four Molotov cocktails stored inside the hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne of the big changes, that we never saw in the past, is guns being used in hate crimes,\u201d said the panel moderator, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/faculty\/jack-mcdevitt\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jack McDevitt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, professor of the practice in criminology and criminal justice, and director of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/irj\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institute on Race and Justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McDevitt, who has been studying hate crimes for 35 years, remembers a time when fewer than 1% of them were committed with guns. The ongoing use of firearms \u201cchanges the dynamics of hate crimes in America,\u201d McDevitt said. \u201cAnd believe me, this is an American issue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another complicating dynamic of mass shootings is that many of them happen within families, noted <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/faculty\/gordana-rabrenovic\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gordana Rabrenovic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate professor of sociology and director of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/brudnickcenter\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is part of a larger discussion of domestic violence, of issues of resentment and powerlessness, and when people feel that then they use the violence as a way of regaining power,\u201d said Rabrenovic, noting that the father is usually the killer in these instances. \u201cViolence as a tool to get recognition and power is something that I think comes from our culture. That has to be addressed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cps.northeastern.edu\/faculty\/richard-obryant\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Richard L. O\u2019Bryant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recalled feelings of helplessness that he experienced while fleeing a train station during a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/04\/18\/metro\/man-suffers-non-life-threatening-injuries-shooting-ruggles-mbta-station\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">public shooting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that left one man injured following the Boston Marathon in April. He has applied that experience while considering the victims of recent attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat does it feel like to be trapped in a building knowing that somebody is hunting you? What does it feel like to be in a situation where you have no power, no control, over what is happening around you?\u201d said O\u2019Bryant, director of the African American Institute and research associate at the Dukakis Center. \u201cIt\u2019s really a challenge for us collectively. We have to change this and not allow the resistance, whatever it may be, to win. Because it can\u2019t go on like this \u2026 like life is normal. It\u2019s not normal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The panelists agreed that the need for communication is paramount. People must be able to discuss their differences without generating hate for each other, Landsmark said. Amid the longstanding desire for federal legislation, O\u2019Bryant added that it was important to develop relationships with young people who are growing up in a high-anxiety era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2021\/05\/25\/meet-chong-kim-wong-northeastern-universitys-vice-chancellor-and-dean-of-students\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chong Kim-Wong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, vice chancellor and dean of students, noted that Northeastern offers counseling and other resources of <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastern.edu\/uhcs\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">support for students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHow can we engage our students early on?\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m thinking about how we can get those resources to our students so that they can correct it with some help and support before things go down a dark path. It\u2019s really important for us to continue to engage in these conversations, and the key thing is to be very proactive and not wait for something to happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to remember that people with mental health issues are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators of it, said <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/faculty\/carlos-cuevas\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carlos Cuevas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a clinical psychologist, who added that the families, colleagues, neighbors and others who are affected by gun violence carry the wounds with them long after the news media has moved on to the next shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTrauma doesn\u2019t care how long ago it was,\u201d said Cuevas, professor of criminology and criminal justice, and co-director of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cssh.northeastern.edu\/irj\/violence-and-justice-research-lab\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Violence and Justice Research Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cTrauma doesn\u2019t care who else was there.
