Then their lives were turned upside down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9B3BE81B-07E4-FC82-D2CE-CF74A8546AF8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      When one by one, the friends of a young woman living in Beijing began disappearing \u2013 detained by the police after attending a vigil together weeks earlier \u2013 she felt sure that her time was nearing.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3876890B-6F95-1B36-D3E3-D9AAB0BDBA33@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cAs I record this video, four of my friends have already been taken away,\u201d the woman, age 26, said, speaking clearly into the camera in a video recording from late December obtained by CNN.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6FA13A12-3E20-8045-8647-D9AAB0BF6525@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cI entrusted some friends of mine with making this video public after my disappearance. In other words, when you see this video, I have been taken away by the police for a while.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_788EE26D-4E3B-DA6A-A48C-DC22DFDD987C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      The woman \u2013 a recent graduate who is an editor at a publishing house \u2013 is among eight people, mainly young, female professionals in the same extended social circle, that CNN has learned have been quietly detained by authorities in the weeks following a peaceful protest in the Chinese capital on November 27.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_ADB8ACCE-63C9-E3C3-D779-D9AAB0C35438@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      That protest was one of many that broke out in major cities across the country in an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/26\/china\/china-protests-xinjiang-fire-shanghai-intl-hnk\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">unprecedented showing of discontent<\/a> with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/china\" rel=\"noopener\">China\u2019s<\/a> now-dismantled <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/05\/china\/china-protests-loosen-restrictions-intl-hnk-mic\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">zero-Covid controls<\/a>.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_D8838020-A605-51F4-4DAA-D9AAB0C514CC@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      CNN has confirmed that two of those eight were released on bail Thursday evening and Friday, respectively, just days ahead of the Lunar New Year. One release was confirmed to CNN on Friday by her lawyer, who declined to comment further on whether she had been charged with a crime. The second was confirmed by a source with direct knowledge.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_2ADD8378-7B13-F9A0-6D7E-D9AAB0C84971@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      CNN has not been able to confirm whether others were released and if so, how many.  Two of the young women detained, including the editor, have been formally charged with \u201cpicking quarrels and provoking trouble,\u201d people directly familiar with their cases said Friday \u2013 a step that could bring them closer to standing trial, with neither granted bail as of that day.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_DD093493-5960-904B-637A-DA1F551EC2B7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      The overall number of people detained in connection with the protests within China\u2019s notoriously opaque security and judicial systems also remains uncertain.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_88233FE7-A1C3-839D-69E3-D9AAB0CAF975@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Beijing authorities have made no official comment about the detentions and the city\u2019s Public Security Bureau did not respond to a faxed request for comment from CNN. There has been no public confirmation from the authorities involved that these or any other detentions were made in connection with the protests.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_AF3FF1D6-701F-F888-7262-D9AAB0CC58B4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      CNN followed up on Monday with the district branch that is believed to be responsible for those detained following Beijing\u2019s November 27 protest, but the branch didn\u2019t respond prior to publication.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_978DCCAE-8ACD-2480-1076-D9AAB0CF98F6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      What is known about these detentions, carried out quietly in the weeks after November 27, stands as a chilling marker of the lengths to which China\u2019s ruling Communist Party will go to stamp out all forms of dissent and free speech \u2013 and the tactics used to counter perceived threats.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C026EDF7-7564-8CE4-6D8B-D9AAB0D18170@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      The account that follows has, except where otherwise indicated, been reconstructed from interviews with three separate sources, who each directly know at least one of the people who were detained and are familiar with the circumstances of others within that circle.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_623B14A1-EAEC-291D-CF76-DC1D1EF152B8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      CNN has agreed not to name any sources due to their concerns about retribution from the Chinese state and the sensitivities of speaking to foreign media. Public anger had grown following the emergence of video footage that appeared to show lockdown measures delaying firefighters from accessing the scene and reaching victims.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_DF3F40A0-A218-6765-93F0-D9AAB0DCD57C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Many in the crowd that gathered in the heart of Beijing\u2019s embassy district that night held up blank sheets of white A4-sized paper \u2013 a metaphor for the countless critical posts, news articles and outspoken social media accounts that were wiped from the internet by China\u2019s censors. Some decried censorship and called for greater political freedoms, or shouted out slogans calling for an end to the incessant Covid tests and lockdowns. Others lit the flashlights on their phones in a sign of remembrance for the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/25\/china\/china-zero-covid-discontent-reopening-mic-intl-hnk\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">lives lost in the enforcement<\/a> of that zero-Covid policy \u2013 the lights reflecting on the river flowing below, according to images and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/world\/2022\/11\/28\/selina-wang-china-protest-walk-and-talk-vpx-ovn-intl.cnn\" rel=\"noopener\">reporting by CNN<\/a> at the time.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_48C1F8C6-AD8C-E992-5455-D9AAB0DEAEA2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      While police lined the streets that evening, the mood was largely calm and peaceful.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_8F98B48A-131C-FBB9-F33A-D9AAB0E1EA36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      The editor at the publishing house who joined that night did so \u201cwith a heavy heart,\u201d after having heard that others would be mourning the Urumqi fire victims near the river that evening, she said in her video message.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7BCE1835-1E13-35C0-A4EA-D9AAB0E46C38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Carrying flowers and notes of condolence for the victims, the editor met up with her friends. Police confiscated or searched their phones and electronic devices and subjected at least one to a urine test, according to one of the sources. Some, like the editor, were initially brought in for questioning, and held for around 24 hours, before they were released.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9CE0BD1C-FA61-8160-0432-D9AAB0FDF851@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      For those in the group, an uneasy calm descended in the days following. For the editor, she said she felt that could have been the end of it. They felt that what they had done was innocuous and no different from others in the crowd that night, according to people familiar with the thinking of some of those detained.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_61E3DAFD-5A0B-FB8F-A13A-D9AAB1007989@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      But just over two weeks later, the round-up of these Beijing friends began. Starting from December 18, four women in the group of friends and one of their boyfriends were detained by police over a period of several days. The editor learned of detentions among her friends with a sense of terror, a source said. She decided that if she were going to be taken away too, it would be better from her hometown in central China than a rented flat in Beijing.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A19053CB-BF45-19CD-0AF2-D9AAB1042ABC@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      In the video recording, she said she attended the gathering with her friends that night because they had the \u201cright to express their legitimate emotions when fellow citizens die\u201d as people who care about the society they live in.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_2B250EBD-E66B-5478-E2B8-D9AAB1082283@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cAt the scene, we followed the rules, without causing any conflict with the police \u2026 Why does this have to cost the lives of ordinary young people? \u2026 Why can we be taken away so arbitrarily?\u201d she asked.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_8F8C34B0-9523-D86E-C29C-D9AAB10C2D97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      But on December 23, after returning to her hometown, she too was taken into custody, according to two people familiar with her situation. Several days later, her friend, the sociology graduate, was also detained while visiting her hometown in southern China, becoming the seventh person in the circle to be taken in by police.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_82F95801-1FD3-A060-78EA-D9AAB111DD18@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      After their detentions, another friend began reaching out to their families, who were from different parts of the country and not previously in contact, in the hopes of helping coordinate the young women\u2019s defense, according to a person familiar with the situation.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_91C1C16D-F7A2-57A9-4ABB-D9AAB115C6E8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Earlier this month, that friend, too, was detained, according to two sources.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E156B4F8-8F9B-68AC-0D91-D9AAB11A57F8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      People who know them echoed a sense of confusion over the detentions in interviews with CNN, describing them as young female professionals working in publishing, journalism and education, that were engaged and socially-minded, not dissidents or organizers.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A992A23B-5EF3-0E00-17D0-D9AAB11F3BA6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      One of those people suggested that the police may have been suspicious of young, politically aware women. data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Not long after, in more pointed comments, China\u2019s envoy in France suggested to reporters \u2013 without providing any evidence \u2013 that while the demonstrations may have begun due to public frustration with Covid-19 controls, they were swiftly co-opted by anti-China foreign forces, according to a transcript later posted on the embassy\u2019s website.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4F72CB3B-21F0-9B57-816C-D9AAB1542D9D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      In his New Year\u2019s Eve address in late December, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said, it was \u201conly natural for different people to have different concerns or hold different views on the same issue\u201d in a big country, and what mattered was \u201cbuilding consensus\u201d \u2013 a comment seen by some observers as striking a conciliatory tone, in contrast to its security crackdown.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_FD7BA999-E248-987D-0234-D9AAB15CEF3F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cThe people, including a former student of the University of Chicago, have recently been detained in China due to their participation in peaceful protests,\u201d and called for their prompt release.\n data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Under Chinese criminal law, prosecutors have 37 days to approve a criminal detention or let the detainees go, and if people are not released within that time, they have little chance to be released before trial \u2013 and almost all trials end in a guilty verdict, according to Teng.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\"
