Credit: Getty.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/476445\/mass-shootings-in-the-us-by-shooter-s-gender\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the majority of mass shootings in the United States. We know that. But the extent to which male shooters outnumber female perpetrators is nonetheless surprising. The Violence Project, a nonpartisan research group that tracks American mass shooting data as far back as 1966, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theviolenceproject.org\/mass-shooter-database\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that men are responsible for 98% of all mass shootings. Statistics <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/3829626-half-of-mass-attacks-sparked-by-personal-domestic-workplace-disputes-secret-service-data\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week by the US Secret Service, which cover the more broadly defined \u2018mass attack\u2019, 25% of which don\u2019t include a firearm, puts that number at 96%, which is still staggering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been 55 mass shootings in the US <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_States_in_2023\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so far this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Of those, 38 have resulted in at least one fatality. This month, separate shooting sprees in the Californian cities of <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-01-22\/la-me-monterey-park-mass-shooting-lunar-new-years-eve\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monterey Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-64382598\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half Moon Bay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> killed 12 (including the perpetrator) and seven people, respectively. If mass attacks are an epidemic in the US, why do so few women commit them?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/03\/27\/981803154\/why-nearly-all-mass-shooters-are-men\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview with NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Violence Project\u2019s president, Jillian Peterson, a forensic psychologist and criminology professor at Hamline University, offered a theory: \u201cMen are just generally more violent.\u201d Others, like Fairness &amp; Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), have <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fair.org\/home\/mass-shooters-most-common-trait-their-gender-gets-little-press-attention\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the disparity is because shootings are motivated by \u201ctoxic masculinity\u201d or grievances against women. Other scholars <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jmvr.org\/2021\/10\/an-exploration-of-female-mass-shooters\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attribute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this to \u201can evolutionary drive that pushes males to be more aggressive than females\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are shades of truth in all of these explanations, but a more nuanced answer might lie in the divergent nature of mass shootings and female violence. It\u2019s not that there aren\u2019t violent women, even if there are fewer of them: there are (t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he number is<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prb.org\/resources\/are-u-s-girls-becoming-more-violent\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> growing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too). However, mass shootings don\u2019t bear easy comparison to other types of violence. Yesterday\u2019s serial killers are not necessarily today\u2019s mass shooters. That\u2019s only true in terms of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2018\/02\/20\/swapping-one-evil-for-another-have-mass-shooters-replaced-serial-killers\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they play in media narratives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass shootings are their own type of aggression, one that is both external and, when compared to other homicides, impersonal. Female violence, on the other hand, is more personal. Another way to think about it? Women <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implode<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; men <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explode<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass shootings are explosive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a huge exploratory gap in the literature around female mass shooters, but we can draw conclusions from data available elsewhere. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jaapl.org\/content\/40\/3\/442\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies on female violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrate that women channel their anger in a private and calculated way, whereas men tend to lash out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the new data from the Secret Service also shows that 50% of mass shootings are sparked by personal, domestic, or workplace disputes \u2014 that is, personal grievances \u2014 so where\u2019s the distinction? It\u2019s more about the expression of aggression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female violence is individualised. It\u2019s often <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2968709\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reactive or in response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to abuse from a sexual partner. It affects the family, relationships, and caregiving: Munchausen-by-proxy, familicide or infanticide, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-lists\/killer-wives-8-most-infamous-black-widow-murderers-249561\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black widows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and angels of death (healthcare providers who kill their patients) are all common typologies. It almost always happens within the victim\u2019s home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jmvr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/An-Exploration-of-Female-Mass-Shooters-Silva-Schmuhl.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Mass Violence Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the few pieces that analyse female mass shooters, Jason R. Silva and Margaret Schmuhl found many more similarities than differences between male and female perpetrators. They also found that female shooters were distinct in general from female homicide offenders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not that women aren\u2019t violent. They certainly can be. It\u2019s just that men are more likely to exhibit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type of violence.
