Green Lantern Hal Jordan learns about the Justice League’s death in DC’s Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1, which then sets him up to make a major move against Pariah and the Dark Army.
Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1 features a story — “Survivors” by writer Chuck Brown, artist Fico Ossio and colorist Sebastian Cheng — that sees Hal learn about the fateful end to the Justice League. Hal wasn’t called to fight Pariah and the Dark Army in Justice League #75; rather, Green Lantern John Stewart was killed in the battle along with a number of other heroes, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and more.
In Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1, Hal is in pursuit of a “dangerous interplanetary creature” who plunges straight into one of Earth’s oceans. With the alien quickly metamorphosing into several smaller creatures when coming in contact with water and then heading straight for Atlantis, Hal receives no answer when he calls for backup from the Justice League. He, instead, finds assistance from Jackson Hyde, Aquaman’s mentee who is also Black Manta’s son.
Jackson and Hal work together to protect Atlantis from any serious harm. During the middle of the battle, Hal asks Jackson why Aquaman isn’t responding to his calls, which is when Jackson has to break the news. “He’s dead,” Jackson simply tells him. “He and the League are all dead.”
After Hal and Jackson are finished with the creatures, Jackson tells the Green Lantern that the world is shifting in a multitude of ways without any Justice League there to protect the planet. “The Atlantean Council is preparing for the power vacuum the League’s death will create,” Jackson explains. “The world may need me, but Atlantis needs me more.” Hal responds, “It’s okay, take all the time you need. I’m going to find out what happened to the League. Listen, you and other young heroes will need to step up. The world needs all of you right now.”
DC previously revealed the upcoming Dark Crisis #3 by Joshua Williamson and Daniel Sampere unleash a massive attack against Pariah and the Great Darkness. The synopsis for the issue, which releases Aug. 2, reads, “Hal Jordan has launched all-out war on Pariah and the Dark Army to avenge his fallen Justice League teammates—but how can one man stand in the way of the Great Darkness? Meanwhile back on Earth, Titans Tower has burned and Deathstroke’s army has continued its scorched-earth march across the planet. To stop Slade Wilson, the young heroes of the DCU might have no other choice than to turn to the brutal tactics of Black Adam…”
Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1 additionally comes from writers Williamson, Jeremy Adams, Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Stephanie Phillips, artists Dan Jurgens, Rosi Kämpe, Leila Del Duca and Clayton Henry, colorists Hi-Fi, Matt Herms, Jordie Bellaire and Marcelo Maiolo, inker Norm Rapmund and letterer Josh Reed.
