• Position: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Level B/C) in Counter-terrorism Studies, Faculty of Arts
• Salary Package: $108,111 – $127,913 (Level B); $132,004 – $151,806 (Level C) p.a, plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading
• Appointment Type: Two-year fixed term, full-time

The Role

The Department of Security Studies and Criminology (SSC) is looking to appoint an engaging and innovative Academic with specialist knowledge in counter-terrorism studies in the position of Lecturer (Level B) or Senior Lecturer (Level C). The successful applicant will be expected to make a major contribution to research; develop, teach and convene units in counter-terrorism studies at a postgraduate and undergraduate level, while supervising Higher Degree Research students. You will also be expected to engage with relevant stakeholders in the community, government and industry, including through externally-funded grant projects, and make an active contribution to the administration of the Department, Faculty and University. Note the role is for a two-year fixed term.

About You

With a PhD in a relevant field to counter-terrorism studies, 3 to 5 years post-PhD professional experience, and a strong research track record, including high-quality peer-reviewed publications and strong university level teaching experience, you will have a forward-looking and innovative research agenda and cogent plan for seeking funding to support it. Professional experience at the nexus of research and policy will be a plus. As a teacher, you will have proven experience of impactful and engaging teaching in both the classroom and online learning environments for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Your collaborative, collegial approach will ensure you perform effectively within an intellectually diverse, inter-disciplinary and international environment. About Us

The Department of Security Studies and Criminology (SSC), within the Faculty of Arts, offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, expert seminars and opportunities for research in the many areas associated with security studies and criminology. SSC draws together senior academics and leading industry professionals specialising in research, theory and practice associated with security, and the protection of both the national interest and the rights of individuals and groups within society. SSC’s principal areas of teaching and research centre on security and strategic studies, cyber security, intelligence, terrorism, and criminology.

The stream of counter-terrorism studies seeks to incorporate researchers with different disciplinary, theoretical and professional orientations, ranging from anthropology, through social scientific investigation, to history and policy formulation. In our research, teaching, and professional engagement, we bridge the divide between professional, theoretical and public interests. Our areas of interest within counter-terrorism studies are broad, including countering violent extremism, political violence, online recruitment, and mapping right-wing movements. The SSC counter-terrorism stream works closely with colleagues across our interdisciplinary department, including the strategic studies, intelligence, cybersecurity, and criminology streams.

Essential Selection Criteria:

• A PhD completed in a relevant discipline with 3 to 5 years relevant post-PhD professional experience;
• Demonstrated success in producing high-quality research in the area of counter-terrorism studies broadly defined;
• Ability to teach units across different themes within counter-terrorism studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level including the ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including in an online environment;
• Ability to supervise higher degree research students;
• A record of contributing to administrative service in a University or professional setting and to interact effectively within these settings;
• A record of enhancing, or capacity to enhance, the University’s reputation through engagement with relevant external stakeholders, especially at the nexus of academic research and policy-relevant outputs;
• Commitment to and knowledge of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity and its application in Higher Education.
