Defund Police movement led to spike in violent crime – Empower Wisconsin

MADISON — Milwaukee posted a record number of murders for the second year in a row. In Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly Love, 562 people were victims of homicide in 2021. Murders hit record highs, too, in Portland, Ore., Albuquerque, N.M., and Louisville, Ky.
Homicides rose by 4 percent in 22 major American cities through the third quarter of 2021, according to a study by the Council on Criminal Justice, a think tank focusing on criminal-justice policy and research.
Violent crime is up nationwide, and a vast majority of Americans believe the left’s campaign to defund law enforcement is to blame.
A new Politico/Morning Consult poll shows 75 percent of respondents think the defunding movement is “a reason that violent crime is increasing in the United States.” More so, nearly half of those surveyed said defunding the police is a “major reason” for the spike in violent crime. Only a quarter said it had nothing to do with the rise.
More than two-thirds of respondents (69 percent) say increasing funding for police departments would ease the increase in violent crime. Only 7 percent said cutting funds for law enforcement would significantly decrease violent crime.
As the Wall Street Journal reports, the rise in violent crime followed one of the most violent years in decades. In 2020, murders in the U.S. rose nearly 30% from the prior year to 21,570, the largest single-year increase ever recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The rate of 6.5 per 100,000 residents was the highest since 1997.
The poll’s findings should be a wake-up call for the woke Democratic Party, which has supported the radical left’s movement to drastically cut funding or even eliminate law enforcement. In Milwaukee, four of the seven candidates for mayor — Acting Mayor and Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson, Ald. Marina Dimitrijevic, state Sen. Lena Taylor, and Leshu Griffin have actively defunded police or endorsed the movement.
The same poll found President Joe Biden’s approval numbers at just 41 percent. Only 38 percent of Biden’s handling of the economy. Just 33 percent approve of his handling of immigration.
