Martin Luther King events in Alachua County: politics, service, art

The Martin Luther King holiday is packed with activities across Alachua County to commemorate the life, legacy and work of the civil rights hero.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Florida is hosting a plethora of events to celebrate the upcoming holiday under the theme “These are Troubled Times: We are still fighting.”

Thursday, Jan. 13
Conversations: Black Legacies and Modern Media — UF Professor Courtney Moore-Taylor will discuss how novel information can have affect the legacies of Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders. The event will be held at the Institute of Black Culture, 1510 West University Ave., from 12 to 1 p.m.
Killing King Again: Race, Power and the cost of unfulfilled dreams — Guest speaker Charles Wesley McKinney Jr. will discuss the U.S. Capital insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, and how no one referenced King’s call to non-violence two weeks before MLK day. The event will take place at Pugh Hall, 296 Buckman Drive, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 14
Alachua County Criminal Justice Center will be renamed to the Stephan P. Mickle Courthouse. Alachua County Courthouse, 220 South Main St., Gainesville. Event begins at 12 p.m.
The event will feature speakers from Alachua County, the city of Gainesville, and the judiciary as well as music, a color guard and words of inspiration.
Alachua County middle and high school students participated in an essay/poetry contest based on a theme pertaining to Judge Mickle’s impact on history, society, and the future. The winner of this year’s contest will share their essay during the ceremony. The contest, promoted through the Alachua County school system, will be an annual event.
“It is a tremendous honor to see the courthouse named after my father,” said his daughter Stephanie Mickle, in a press release from the county. “It’s important for others to be able to see themselves in his life. His sacrifices and triumphs will inspire others for generations to come and impact our youth early in their lives and education.”

Monday, Jan. 17
Hall of Fame Award Enshrinement Program at the Martin Luther King Memorial Gardens, 200 E. University Ave. Hall of Fame Honorees: Community Activist, Aerial Lane and Judge Stephen P. Mickle. Event begins at 11:00 a.m. For additional information contact: 352-376-2442
King Celebration Annual Commemorative March will be from the MLK Memorial Gardens to Citizens Field, 1100 NE 14th St., starting at noon. For additional information call 352-376-2442
National Holiday Kick-Off Program will be held at Citizens Field, 1100 NE 14th St.. Gabrielle Gregory, senior at P.K. Yonge Research School, will receive the Edna M. Hart Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Award. Event begins at 1 p.m. For additional information contact: 352-376-2442

House Painting in Porters Quarter, gathering at the Porters Quarter Community Center, 512 SW 6th Ave. Event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For additional information call 352-226-2623
City of Newberry Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will start with a march from City Hall, 25440 W Newberry Road, to the Martin Luther King Jr. center, 25515 NW 6th Ave.n at 11:30 a.m. The celebration will be followed by a program that will begin at noon. MLK Day of Service 2022, a community engagement event for UF students to learn about community and social issues around the city of Gainesville. Located at the J. Wayne Reitz Union, Rion Ballroom, 655 Reitz Union Drive, University of Florida. Event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
