A Monroe County inmate was hit with a theft charge March 26 after he was spotted taking things out of a trash can.

Jailer Clayton Foxx said it was around 9:45 p.m. when Deputy Brandon Anthony brought inmate Brandon McGrail to booking and said while he was doing a sick check, he saw McGrail taking things out of a trash can.

Anthony said he asked McGrail what he was doing and McGrail took his hands out of the trash can and said he wasn’t doing anything.

Anthony said he took McGrail onto Medical, then, as he was taking McGrail back to his cell, McGrail allegedly tried to grab some gloves off a cart.

Anthony said he told McGrail to stop and asked him if he had anything on him he wasn’t supposed to have. McGrail said he didn’t have anything, but Anthony performed a search on him and found two medical cups in his shirt pocket, a blue dry erase marker and a permanent red marker in his hand and an allergy relief bottle with several pills inside of it.

After McGrail was taken back to his cell, nurses at the medical center said the pill bottle had been on a counter before it disappeared.

McGrail, 29, Sunset Drive, Sweetwater, was charged with theft.
