THE ORGANIZATION
The Center for Court Innovation is committed to reducing crime
and incarceration, addressing violence, supporting survivors, and
building communities while strengthening public trust in justice.
The Center seeks justice for marginalized groups, bringing an
equity lens – particularly a racial and gender equity lens – to its
work. For 25 years, the Center has worked to foster justice and
equity to create safe, healthy, and thriving communities and,
ultimately, to transform the justice system.
The Center is an 800-employee, $100 million nonprofit that
accomplishes its vision through three pillars of work: creating and
scaling operating programs to test new ideas and solve problems,
performing original research to determine what works (and what
doesn’t), and providing expert assistance and policy guidance to
justice reformers around the world.
Operating Programs
The Center’s operating programs, including the award-winning Red
Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Court,
test new ideas, solve difficult problems, and attempt to achieve
systemic change within the justice system. Our projects include
community-based violence prevention programs, alternatives to
incarceration, reentry initiatives, and court-based initiatives
that reduce the use of unnecessary incarceration and promote
positive individual and family change. Through this programming, we
have produced tangible results like safer streets, reduced
incarceration, and improved neighborhood perceptions of
justice.
Research
Researchers at the Center conduct independent evaluations,
documenting how government systems work, how neighborhoods
function, and how reform efforts change things. We believe in the
“action research” model; accordingly, our researchers provide
regular feedback on the results of the Center’s own operating
programs. The Center has published studies on topics including
youth in the sex trade, reentry, gun violence, and drug treatment
as an alternative to incarceration. Our researchers have been
published in numerous peer-reviewed journals.
Policy & Expert Assistance
The Center provides hands-on, planning and implementation
assistance to a wide range of jurisdictions in areas of reform such
as problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment
courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, reducing
incarceration and the use of fines/fees and reducing crime and
violence. Our current expert assistance takes many forms, including
help with analyzing data, strategic planning and consultation,
policy guidance, and hosting site visits to its operating programs
in the New York City area.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Center is seeking a Managing Director of National
Initiatives & Research to lead and expand the Center’s
research, expert assistance, policy offerings and impact (currently
100 team members and a $16 million budget). Reporting to the
Executive Director, this inaugural position will be part of the
Center’s nine-person executive team, partnering with the Executive
Director and other organizational leaders to transform systems
through research, policy, and expert assistance that results in
safer homes and streets, reductions in incarceration, and improved
neighborhood perceptions of justice in communities both nationally
and internationally.
Responsibilities
Strategic Growth and Oversight
- Develop and oversee a cohesive strategic vision for broadening
and deepening the Center’s research, policy, and expert assistance
footprint at the federal level and with state and local justice
policy reform actors across the country - Align existing work of the research, policy, and expert
assistance, working together to increase the Center’s national
footprint through strategic deployment of resources - In collaboration with the Center’s Director of Development,
create a fund development strategy that supports strategic growth;
play a key role in implementation of the fund development
strategy - Develop and maintain strategic partnerships that create
opportunities for revenue-generating lines of business/service - Oversee the development of issue-oriented campaigns and events
to advance the Center’s national program, policy, and/or research
agenda
Thought Leadership
- Serve as a leading voice of the Center and thought leader in
the field of justice reform at the cutting edge of innovative
practice and research, identifying emerging issues and staying
abreast of new developments - Advance the Center’s position as an expert on criminal justice
reform, continuing to position the organization as the “go to” for
policy expertise, research, and innovative programming at the
federal, state, and local level - Amplify the Center’s work and ensure it contributes to the
national and international dialogue about justice reform - Convene and host justice reform actors from across the
country
Network/Partnership Development
- Develop and steward meaningful relationships with local, state,
and federal policymakers and judicial advocates (including those in
advocacy organizations, think tanks, and academic institutions),
working collaboratively with a range of constituencies from
governors to district court judges and researchers to
advocates - Scale the Center’s programming by working collaboratively with
state and local leaders across the country, primarily those outside
of New York and New Jersey, on applying Center programs and best
practices in their jurisdictions
Leadership and Management
- Lead, manage, and support a group of seasoned, expert directors
leading the research, policy, and expert assistance arms of the
Center’s work - Develop and implement a plan for strategic expansion that
aligns with overall strategy to broaden and deepen the Center’s
policy, reform, research, and expert assistance footprint at the
federal level and with state and local policy justice reform actors
across the country - Oversee and build an Office of the National Initiatives &
Research, providing consultation and guidance on direct reports’
decisions related to personnel, finance, and programming
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will
have an advanced degree with a minimum of 12 years of demonstrated
success in leadership, managerial, problem-solving, and strategic
planning capabilities as a senior executive in the nonprofit and/or
public sectors. Must have a demonstrated commitment to the Center’s
mission and values as well as a working knowledge of and
credibility in criminal and/or civil justice and broader social
justice matters. Exceptional writing abilities together with
outstanding oral presentation and public speaking skills are
required. Candidate must be an outgoing, proactive, skilled
communicator able to establish and maintain strong relationships
with a range of stakeholders and have a zest for collaboration.
Compensation: Salary range
is $225,000 – $250,000. The Center for Court Innovation offers
an excellent benefits package including comprehensive healthcare
with a national network, free basic dental coverage, vision
insurance, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance, and
flexible spending accounts including commuter FSA. We prioritize
mental health care for our staff and offer services like Talkspace
and Ginger through our healthcare plans. The Center offers 4
weeks of vacation and 3 weeks of sick leave each year with
carryover options. Our generous 403(b) plan focusses on making
retirement accessible to all staff; all employees can contribute
anywhere from 1-5% and receive a two-to-one employer
contribution. Any contribution an employee makes to their
retirement fund up to 5% will be doubly matched. The Center also
proactively assists all employees in completing their certification
for public service loan forgiveness.
Location: Remote work with regular trips
to the New York office; Washington, DC; and partner
jurisdictions.
